my baby is 9 days old now and his skin is peeling really bad. i just gave him a sponge bath and a lot of it came off, but it's still peeling really bad. what is this and is it common? did anyone have this problem with their newborn? any suggestions?

I had heard that they will shed all the skin that was soaking in the amniotic fluid. My baby was still peeling at 4wks. My doctor suggested not using "baby products" since they can be too drying and the fragrances too harsh if you baby has sensative skin. She recommended using Neutrogena soap and shampoo. She also recommended lotioning him up within 5 minutes after getting out of the bath with either Lubriderm or Nivea creme. It seems to be working. Initially I didn't like using the other products since they didn't make him smell like a "baby", but I get more complements on how good he smells after using the Nivea creme on him!

olive oil in the bath works wonders and it is perfectly natural. My midwife suggrsted this.
