Ok, so you are not supposed to lay in a tanning bed your first trimester but you can lay in your bed or on a couch for hours at a time? You guys need something better to worry about, seriously. And no, the rays cannot go to your placenta, are you nuts!? my mother is a very well known doctor and there are many things worse then tanning. Why don't you worry about riding in a car and talking on your cell phone, causes cancer your know!

I have a friend that has been tanning and she is almost 7 months pregnant. Is this safe?

Tanning while pregnant will not hurt the baby. Any doctor that tells anyone that is completely retarded. Tanning itself is bad for your skin and health but has nothing to do with the baby. The rays cant penetrate that far into your body. I am 9 months pregnant and I have been tanning for 3 months. Everything is normal.

the website of the american pregnancy a__sociation says that there are no studies that provide conclusive evidence that tanning beds are harmful to the baby during pregnancy. UV light is not in direct contact with the baby. As for spinal malformations you shouldnt overheat your body by using saunas, hot tube or tanning beds in the first trimester of pregnancy.

I would have to say "no" to tanning....There is no study to show that tanning is bad but there is also no study to show that tanning is good for you...You are better off living with white skin and not risking anything...Just think of how guilt you would feel if something were to go wrong........

I USE TO WORK AT A TANNING SALON AND I HAD A PREGNANT LADY THAT WOULD COME IN AND TAN. HER DR TOLD HER IT WAS FINE. MY DR ADVISED ME TO WAIT BECAUSE TANNING BEDS GET REALLY HOT AND YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO INCREASE YOUR BODY TEMP OVER A CERTAIN AMOUNT. THAT CAN REALLY HARM THE BABY SO I WOULDN'T EVEN TEMP IT. TRY MYSTIC TAN. THATS WHAT I USE

I am 12w 5d and just started to use Coppertone's Gradual tanning lotion. It is more of a lotion with self tanner in it. I have only used it on my legs. Just enough so I don't look so pale. I read that some of the things found in self tanners have been used in makeup for over 20 years.

This is obviously a question that will never have a right or wrong answer. Even if study was done, some other researcher would argue it. My best advise is that you look at both sides of the argument and make the decision that is best for you. None of su are doctors here and all of our doctors have told us something different. My doctor also told me that it can not penetrate that far and the only worry is to stay hydrated. If thecancer-causing UV rays could penetrate far enough to reach a baby, don't you think we'd be getting more types of cancer from tanning than just skin cancer!? This topic is just one that produces a good argument. You really just have to do what you think is best for you and your unborn child. That's the best think you can do for your baby.

i've been told by dr to forgo exposure to the sun and go for fake tanners.

Why take the risk...that baby is the most important thing and I am willing to do anything to protect him even if it means putting something i love aside for 9 months...

I'm 18 weeks pregnant and wouldn't even think of going tanning. Why would you want to risk ANY harm to your baby? How could you live with yourself if something happened to your baby and you wondered for the rest of your life if the tanning caused it? Why risk it? Now's the time to think of your baby and what's best - it's not the time to be selfish - you have a little being inside of you relying on your every move and action.

I am 9 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. I went tanning with my first and second children from the very begining of my pregnancys to the very end and I plan on doing the same with this one. Not going over 20 min. and only going about twice a week I feel is just fine. My doctor told me with my first child that it wouldn't hurt the baby and the baby will get as hot as your getting so if you feel to hot simply get out. Both of my girls were and are as healthy as can be and in no such way are suffering from me going tanning. I think if that tanning makes you feel good about yourself go for it. Just because your pregnant does not mean you need to feel c___py about yourself for 9 months. Your baby is feeling what your feeling so be happy!!!

actually you risk the baby getting spina bifida

Do they have Mystic Tan where you live? I would try that over a tanning bed. There are some on here that had good experiences but just like drinking alcohol while pregnant, you are taking a risk. This doesn't even account for the fact that the rays in tanning beds are much more harmful than the sun's rays, no matter what line the people working in the salon will give you. I know of several women in their 20's who have died from skin cancer believed to be related to tanning. Would you really want your child to grow up without a mother? As a former tanner, I think that if you try Mystic, you may actually like it. Your tan will last about 5 days without causing harm and/or excessive wrinkles a tanning booth will cause.

It's fine. To those who cry "why risk it"...I hope you don't own cats. That's more likely to harm your baby than tanning booths, by far.

Warning - July 10

Ladies- I was 16 years old when I found out that I had skin cancer. It was a terrifying experience, and I have made every effort to protect myself from the sun since then. I have had 2 more relapses despite this since the damage has already been done to my skin. I was lucky because I just happened to be visiting a dermatologist at the time the first cancer surfaced. Please put aside your vanity and think of the life growing inside of you- it is your job to protect and provide for it, and you can't do that if you are not here.
