This is for some of you girls that are late and keep getting BFNs. I have a 16 month old. I didn't even know I was pregnant with him. My period was 14 days late. I took a test on the 11th day of being late and got a BFN. My DH swore I was pregnant and made me test again so I did on day 14 and got a BFP. I went and had an ultrasound 3 weeks later to see how far I was and I was already 6 1/2 weeks. OMG. I was shocked. I thought my period was just screwed up. Boy was I wrong. We now have a beautiful boy running around and we are trying again. I think I may be pregnant now but not totally convinced yet. So to all of you still waiting there is always a chance you could be like me and produce HCG in little amounts.

I'm confused. If you got your bfp when you were two weeks late (and hence 6 weeks pregnant) and didn't have an ultrasound for another three weeks, then that would put you at 9 weeks pregnant when you had your ultrasound, not 6 1/2.

Oh nevermind, I think I understand. So what you're saying is that when you were 14 days late, it was really only 14 days after you *thought* your period would arrive according to your typical cycle length, and since you actually ended up ovulating sometime around the time you expected your period, you didn't get a positive until later. Right?

Two weeks late made me about 4 weeks pregnant. Right!? Three weeks later I found out I was 6 1/2 weeks by ultrasound.

My doctor told me that my body produces smaller amounts of HCG than the average person.

No, two weeks late would have put you at 6 weeks, so you obviously must have ovulated two weeks late. It goes by the date of your last period. Actually, that's not really true, because that a__sumes a 28 day cycle. How far along you are is determined from two weeks before the conception date. Had you not gotten pregnant that month, you would have ended up having a 6 week cycle.

I guess I am confused now.

If I am on a 28 day cycle (which I was).
Say I have my period on February 1st, that means I ovulated on February 15th. Normally my period would have started on March first. If it didn't that would make me 2 weeks preg. two week after that makes me 2 weeks late which would make me 4 weeks pregnant!!!?

If you are pregnant on the day you've expected your period, then you are already four weeks pregnant, since the gestation time starts two weeks *before* conception. If your period was 2 weeks late, then at that point you were already 6 weeks pregnant. If, as I think you said, you had an ultrasound yet 3 weeks later, then you would have been 9 weeks pregnant. You must NOT have ovulated on Feb. 15th, when you expected to. You must have ovulated closer to March 1 - two weeks late - in order for the baby to have been 6 1/2 weeks at the time of the ultrasound. The first two weeks of your menstrual cycle are variable, even if your cycles have functioned like clockwork. You had to have ovulated two weeks late (unless, of course, there's something I've missed here). Does that make sense?

LIn,
I can see how that would be considered 9 weeks pregnant by using cycle days but if I had an ultrasound saying I was 6 weeks that means I am 6 weeks pregnant from the day of conception.!!?

No, that doesn't mean six weeks from the day of conception. 6 weeks pregnant means 4 weeks from the time of conception, so you must have ovulated two weeks late and conceived two weeks after you thought you did.

I don't mean to keep this up but I really don't understand. If an ultrasound measures the actual size of the baby that means if the size measures say 12 weeks then you concieved 12 weeks ago and that you are 14 weeks pregnant. I don't see how you can be measuring at 14 weeks if you concieved 12 weeks ago. Do you know what I am asking??????

Do you know - this was the best thing I have read in a long time. On Tuesday I will be 3 weeks late and so far still getting BFN. But even my doctor said that I am definitely not pregnant and said to me a week ago that I should definitely coming on within the next couple days. Well this was a week ago. Its just good to know that it really is possible to get a positive very late. I just hope that in my case my body also produces little amounts of HCG.

JenE, I'm sorry this keeps getting so confusing. The gestation time of the baby goes by two weeks before conception and NOT by the date of conception. If the doctor says that the baby measures at 6 1/2 weeks, then that would mean that the baby was actually conceived 4 1/2 weeks ago. If he told you that the measurements of the baby indicate that it was conceived 6 1/2 weeks ago, then your baby would be 8 1/2 weeks along as far as the gestation time goes. Does that make sense?

Thanks Lin, I do believe it is all making sense.

Silks, I do hope that you are pregnant. It is so hard to wait I know. Well let us know what you find out. I am late now and as of yesterday still got a BFN. I am going to go to the doc on Monday and get the blood test. I will let you girls know what I find out.

I'd be curious to know the blood test outcome too. I'm starting to think I need to make a dr's appt b/c I was suppose to get my af feb 4th and still haven't. I got two BFN's from first response a couple days ago. Do you think I'm way beyond first response tests and should try something else? Maybe my body hasn't produced enough hcg either?
