Applying For College

with my dd it's hard to make the right decision as to what college to go to. At first I was looking into accounting, but at the last second I changed my mind and decided I want to work in an obgyn office. I say office because they have better hours so I can spend more time with Ellie. Just your basic weighing, taking blood pressure, testing urine, and assisting in procedures if needed. My question is, what degrees would I need to get in order to obtain said position? Would I have to take the regular school hours or could I be in something that would allow me to speed through it? I don't mind the work loads I just don't want to have to spend any more time away from my daughter than I need to, and I'd like to be on my own two feet as soon as I can without cheating myself out of a better degree. I live in Orange County, California and I want to go to college somewhere near here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

I think you could do something like becoming a "nurse" or whatever they consider them, not 100% sure. I see the adverts for those colleges you go to for like 6 months then you can be a " nurse " anywhere pretty much. But it's not like a nurse it's doing the simple things the nurses did to you when you were pregnant or that they do to Ellie, but not a NURSE either, I think more along the lines of the ones that sign you in, kind of weigh her, do the few little things like that. Or the ones at your OB office that took your blood pressure your weight asked you your questions and that. You could probably take an online course if you liked it. My cousins are doing college online at the uni of phoenix.

Are those six month cla__ses scams? I've seen like ITT tech commercials that claim that but it seems fishy to me. I was also considering being a Physician's a__sistant which is like someone who takes over if the doctor has to leave to deliver or something. But I'm concerned about the hours. I'd rather just do a 9 to 5 thing. But being a PA pays a bunch more... Bleh I need to do more research :)

Nah they aren't scams lol. I knew a few people that have done that and actually it works.. it's just a litttttle hard is all :)

That kind of position is uaually called a medical a__sistant. It's like inbetween answering the phones, scheduling patients and being a actual nurse. I work basically as a medical a__sistant but since i didn't go to school for it i'm technally called a patient service rep. But i don't have to take weight, blood pressure or anything because i work in orthapedics and the position wasn't really "medical" But if you want to work for an obgyn office you will probably need that certification. There are courses you can take, i'm pretty sure they are more than 6 months but usually less than 2 years, but they are intensive. You should look into it though. Usually medical a__sisants are in high demand, and you can use that training across the medical field not just obsetrics. You could look into postions where you are just at the front desk answering phones and scheduling patients and that might help you decide if that is the field you want to get into.

After just 6 months you are not qualified to take over anything from a doctor. Read the course descriptions carefully, but I doubt it would even qualify you to hand him medical instruments during a procedure.

That being so, is there any way I can speed things up?

Hey sweetie, I hope this helps. There is a handbook where you can look up all kinds of occupations and it lets you know how economically they stand (like the average they make, if there are a lot of people going into the field etc), it tells you what schooling and licensing is required. I used it when entering college and trying to narrow down what I was actually going for and what direction to go in. I can't figure out to put it on here without it telling me I can't add it, so type in OCCUPATIONAL OUTLOOK HANDBOOK on google, and it's the first one that says 2008-09 edition. You can scroll down and search just about anything. Let me know if it helps.

Oh wow that is a HUGE help! Thanks!! I'll bookmark it and look it over with my mom when she wakes up. It's like 3am now I'm only awake because my daughter woke up and now I can't seem to fall back asleep :)
