Hi ladies. I am needing to find someone who has gestational diabetes... I was just told I have it. But the class they want me to take is $1275 to learn how to eat and what to do. Is there anyone on here who could help me. I can't afford to pay what my ins. won't cover. I have founf some info online of what to eat and not eat but any extra info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If I were you I would do a search for a diabetic diet. I do know that sugar is a no-no, but that is the obvious. I would also think that processed fast foods would be out as well. Why don't you call the nurse at the OB's office and let her know your situation, that you can't afford the cla__s and see if she can help you out at all. Maybe she has some literature on the subject she can send to you or you can pick up at the office? I really think that if you can't afford the cla__s your OB would be more than willing to help you with the do's and don'ts. I'll look to quick and see if I can find a site.

Hey, I just checked, and all you have to do is go to ask dot com. Type in gestational diabetes, and all kinds of info comes up. There are a ton of sites and one of them even has a sample diet. I really am sorry you have to go through this. How far along are you? I am 34 weeks 1 day.

Thanks for your help. I put a call into the doctor's office yesterday and spoke to her nurse. She was just as shocked as I was over the price. She was going to talk to the Doc and she what else I could do. I have found some pretty good info just looking up GD meal plans. I am just hoping i can find another mom who is going through this so I could maybe see what she eats....

Funny, we were posting at the same time. Did you try posting your question on the 2nd tri board as well. Usually the the glucose test is done then and maybe someone over there could be of some help??

That is funny... I am 32 weeks today. I tested neg for the first test but on june 5th (31 wks) he was measuring 4lbs 10oz. which was pretty big plus my amniotic fluid is high. Its at 28 I think . which is double what it should be. So they had me check my blood 4 times a day. It wasn't high but it was a little elavated so they wanted me to take this cla__s. I am going to go on that site and print that info out. Thank you so much!

mommaminchey, I have gestational diabetes and can try my best with any questions you have. basically it is all about portions. 15 g of carbohydrate equals one carb. at breakfast and all of my snacks my dr asks that i have at the max two carbs. for lunch and dinner i can have three. i'm not sure if i am explaining this in a way that makes sense. does it?

Oh great. i am so glad I found someone who has it!!!! what you said is what i am generally finding online. I am also curious what kind of things you eat? Like for breakfast, snacks, dinner, lunch etc... And how far along are you? My background on this is, I pa__sed the 1st test but last week (31wks) he measured 4lbs 10 oz and my fluid level was high. Like 28 when it should be 14-15. So I tested myslef 4 times a day and the doc said it was a little high. What numbers did they say they wanted you to have for each time you checked? I hope you don't mind all thse questions?

i don't mind the questions at all. for breakfast i usually have a small bowl of cheerios with a hard boiled egg white. for my snacks i usually have a gla__s of milk (it sucks that milk is considered a carb) because that is what i crave. for lunch i have a peanut b___ter sandwhich and a small piece of fruit and for dinner i mostly have been having salad with chicken or taco salads. i have only been doing this a week so i am still trying to find foods that work well for me. they want my levels to be below 90 before i eat anything and then below 140 after each meal. i am 30 weeks today.

That's great information. I had read today that eggs was a great thing to eat for breakfast. This morning I had special k and grapes. My level was 99. I was really happy with that. That's funny you say that about the 140. When I met with my doctor yesterday all but 1 of my levels were below that. Mostly is the 130's.

Hey, there you go, you have some help. Good luck and congratulations on your impending birth.

dennie21 - June 13

That's good that most of your levels are in the 130s. I have been able to get mine in the 120-130's after meals but I have to take insulin before bed because the ones first thing in the morning are high. :( I think that it is really messed up that it would cost so much for you to get information. They give me my insulin and testing supplies for free at the clinic I go to because they know pregnancy costs enough. Thank goodness for samples.

Well I just got a voice message from my doctors nurse and she said that my doctor isnt happy with me doing it on my own so she is going to try and find a cheaper place.... I just took my after lunch and it was 116.

I don't mean to b___t in here ladies but I had to make a few comments because I am in the same boat. I was told milk was a no-no for breakfast as sugars are already high in the morning and that gives you a surge. By no means am I telling you what to do, I am just telling you what the nutritionist at the high risk Dr told me. I am not "allowed" to have milk until lunch and then only then, dinner and part of a late night snack. IN the morning I usaully have 1/2 English muffin, 1 egg and a piece of cheese. Also, I was told to eat every 2-3 hours. It seems to help keep things more level. The paperwork I got said that the morning range before breakfast should be 60-90 and 2 hours after meals should be 60-120. I posted part of this info on the other thread that was posted the other day but just wanted to pop in here. Again, sorry if I am b___ting in but I just wanted to let you all know what I was told. PS, I have to do a shot at night too cause my first morning numbers were high and nothing can fix that except meds. All the rest of the days numbers are controlled with food.

Frances, by no means are you b___ting in. I appreciate the infor very much. Anything else you want to let me know is great too.
