High Blood Pressure At 38 Weeks

I have had normal blood pressure throughout my pregnancy, and do not have a history of high blood pressure. My blood pressure was also normal during my last pregnancy. But today the nurse said it was high, and that I should return tomorrow. It could be because I am stressed, but I am worried now. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi sara! Don't worry - your bp goes up once in a while and it's normal for it to increase up to 2 weeks prior to delivery. Your body is just getting ready. High bp is steady - it just doesn't appear one day, so don't let them get to you. Best of luck!!!

Hi anne, thanks for your advice. I got my bp taken again today, and it was totally normal, so i am very relieved. I am going to the doctor today and hopefully the baby won't be too big so that i won't need a c-section again... how many weeks along are you?

You are past the point to worry about high blood pressure that much. The only thing would be that they would take your baby now and after 37 weeks the baby is perfectly ready to be born. I wouldn't worry too much about it, the more that you worry the higher it goes.

sara - i am 37 weeks and 3 days. my bp shot up yesterday and i was scared - which made it worse lol. its normal again, like yours. im glad yours showed normal again, that must be a big relief off your mind. try some light exercises during the day, it helps stabilise your bp. also, the bp would be significant if you have protein in your urine (if you do - eat more protein and it stops it).

I have also had a raise in my BP. Mine is normally 120/70 and on last Wed. it went up to 140/90. My dr. told me to lay on my left side for 30 minutes then she took my pressure again while I was laying down. My BP went down to 135/85 while laying down and I had to go back to the dr. the next day. When I went back, my BP was up to 160/98. Now I am on bedrest 90% of the day until my next appointment on Monday. So far, no swelling or protien in urine.

Crystal- at about 27 weeks my BP spiked suddenly at 140/90 and took a week or two to come down. It's been pretty normal ever since and I am 34 weeks now. Stick to bedrest and try to lie on your left side as much as possible...it worked for me.
