Natural Labor HELP

After two births with an epidural I've decided I want to really try natural. For those of you who have birthed with no meds can you please tell me what helps with managing the pain? With both my epis I got them around 7 or 8 cm...just at the point where I was really having trouble breathing. How can you manage at that point?

I had 2 out of 3 of my babies with no meds and what helped me was to breath through my nose and b__w out of my mouth. Panting did not help and it was confusing to me to pant. It does help some people though. Also the biggest thing was to be positive and keep in mind that in no time you will have your bundle of joy that you have been waiting for in your arm. That was the most positive part of going natural for me. I had to get an epi with my dd because she was breech and they had to turn her then induce me. Since she was breech they gave me the epi incase we had to do an emergency csection or something. This pregnancy I honestly probably will not have time for drugs or anything because I do go fast when the baby is engaged and ready, usually. That was always a blessing for me too. If I think of anything else I will post something new to this thread. GL and you can do it!!

I haven't done it but I will be when I give birth because I will be at a birthing center with no pain meds available. My midwife's advice is this: remember that transition, particularly the last couple centimeters, are the roughest but they are the fastest. You are so close at 7-8 centimeters that you can totally make it the last couple. Just remember that they will end, and when they do you will be ready to push out and meet your new baby. Keep your thoughts on the baby coming, the contractions opening up the cervix, and take it one at a time. Make sure you post your experience on here when you have your baby and give us some good advice!!

i got on my hands and knees and rocked back and forth... that really helped me... good luck

I got on my hands and knees too, I also felt comfortable on my side with one leg straight out in the air, my coach held the leg up for me. I almost gave birth on all fours but after I was in the pushing stage I opted for a more of a squat sit position...of course I had a home birth and they let you give birth in what ever position you want practically. and I had no pain meds avaible. :)

though it may be too late...Bradly cla__ses are great at teaching you technician you can do to help you through labor....and it isn't all breathing...there are messages your husband can do for you etc.

I had all 4 of mine without pain meds....Breathing through your nosae and out your mouth definately worked for me...not panting...that just frustrated the hell out of me.....Trying to remain calm and not expect it to be bad also tricks the brain ! ;-) I like to walk it out at the end - we played catch the baby with no.4!! - and I can't abide anyone touching me when I'm having a contarction! Oh and my DH is a super help! He keeps chatting to my m/wife and totally distracts me - he's so nervous he babbles and keeps me well occupied! good luck!

Thanks so much to all of you. It's not too late- I'm due in March so I'm not there quite yet. I did buy a Bradley book and am reading it. I know the cla__s would have been better. I'm with you all...I dont want to be touched or talked to when I'm having contractions...kind of makes me want to slap whoever's talking to me! I'm going to see if I can do no meds this time. My dr said with both my boys if I could have just held out for another 1/2 hr I would have been ready to push...1/2 hr in the whole grand scheme of things is NOT that long so hopefully my labor will go as fast this time. If anyone else has advice on the breathing around 7-8 cm let me know...at that point I just found it hard to breathe at all...I remember curling and squeezing my toes around that time when it hurt so bad! I've never gotten on all fours so may try that.

I don't know, because I haven't given birth yet, and I'll probably give in to meds (pain tolerance is only so strong!). But I think it's amazing that you want to try! Good for you! And I hope it works out for you! Something I was told, is that once you've made it to 7-8 cms, the pain doesn't get any worse. And the satisfaction when baby slides out is supposed to be absolutely amazing! So, best of luck!

Well I had an epidural and then 4 straight boluses into the back b/c the epidural wasn't working and still nothing (poor man was in my room about all day trying to get something to do, the only option was redo the epidural and by that point I was having such bad hip cramps I couldn't sit up much less be still to have that done) so.....needless to say I had my dtr the natural way and well I NEVER want to go through that again. I would rather just lay in the road and have a car run over me. I don't think my delivery was normal by any means even for a natural delivery. I think she was laying a nerve or something. I never had cramps in my stomach as a lot of people describe labor pains, my pain was in my left hip, it was so bad in my left hip that i pulled a muscle in my arm where I was grabbing the side of the bed so hard. The dr did cut me but I still tore-4th degree tear. I still have problems out of my left hip once in a while. I by no means think that all of this was because of no meds but man it would have been nice to have had something to knock the edge off a little. I wish you the best of luck and as much as it can be painfree and fast delivery.
