Ok ladies so I am 36 weeks and 3 days. My baby finally went head down after being oblique breech my entire pregnancy. Today I had my first one week appt and my doc said that she would be happy if I went into spontaneous labor at any time. She did my cervix check and said I am soft and short but closed. I am assuming the soft and short is good but closed means no dilation and no effacement. Has anyone been told this and then been surprised to go into labor soon after? Or how long did you have to wait to go into labor if your OB told you this?

it varies from woman to woman and from pregnancy to pregnancy... there is really not way to tell how long it will be before you go into labor. I was 40% effaced at 32 weeks and I have been at 1cm 50% effaced for the past two weeks Im not almost 38 weeks. I know a girl who is at 3cm dilated and 80% effaced and has been that way for like 3 or 4 weeks she is now almost 39 weeks I think. and there are some women who dilate in a matter of a week or days even... so you could go into labor a week from now or 4 weeks from now. good luck hon! hope it happens soon :)

Krissy- that is good news that you are soft and short. Actually closed means you aren't dilated but soft means you are starting to thin out (efface) but who knows how much unless she told you. My doc never told me besides 30 weeks when I was 80% effaced do to preterm labor.
GOOD LUCK! It could happen anytime!

krissy, good luck!!! I'm right behind you and am really excited for you to see you are so close :) I know that all of a sudden the days are just dragging for me and I'll be 35 weeks tomorrow. I'm not much help though on how soon labor will or will not come, but just wanted to send best wishes!

I agree, sounds like you are not dilated but you can't dilate till your cervix softens so that's good news. :) You still have some time to go and really, it can happen overnight. Everyone is different! I've been between 3-4cm and 80% effaced for almost a month now - and I'm 39.5 weeks. Talk about frustrating! :) I'm so ready! And again, the numbers they give you are no way to measure when you will go into labor - they can just guess at it. Good luck and hang in there!

Short means it's already been effacing.

Good to know, good to know. Thanks for all the info ladies. I have been having some good bh contractions about every 1-2 hours. Unfortunately they aren't painful and are very irregular so I guess its just a waiting game. Stefkay, I check your piczo all the time. I would love to see more belly shots!! Its amazing how fast (and yet how slow) these 9-10 months have gone. Does anyone know if once a baby is head down (such as mine at 36+ weeks) if they can or are likely to change their mind and turn around again??? My LO just seems to be moving all over the friggin place and it worries me cuz she needs to stay head down. LOL.. Anyway thanks again for your info! It is much appreciated!

krissy.. Im not sure what the actual "statistics" are for babies who switch back but I wonder the same thing as you lol, every time my LO moves I wonder if I she'll flip back. but, they say its very unlikely for babies to flip BACK to breech once they have gone head down, partly, because their head is the heaviest part of their whole bodies and its just easier for them to stay upside down. of course there is always a chance of them flipping but it isnt likely to happen. I wouldnt worry to much about it though.. Im sure your LO is content being head down :)
