What Are My Odds

I'm 39 weeks with my first and I'm scheduled to get induced in 5 days with will be a day before my due date. I really don't want to get induced because I've heard it's alot worse so I'm wondering if it's highly unlikely that I will go on my own before?

Unless you are having complications you can tell your doc. you do not want to be induced and would like to wait awhile and see if the baby will come on his/her own.

Why is your doctor inducing you before your due date? If you don't have complications I would definitely ask to wait & see (at least a week). My dd came exactly 1wk late & she was 7lb 9oz, my ds came 5days late & he was 9lb 3oz (big babies run in my family though, so don't be scared yours will be this big) & they both came on spontaneously & were born v____ally. You need to remember that your due date is only an estimate, which is why they say you are full term anywhere from 37-42wks.

I agree with the above - why rush it? Unless there's strong medical necessity. My dct wouldn't let me go more than 2 weeks post date - meaning not more than 42 weeks. I was induced with my first at 41 wks 5 days. And YES, it is really rough. The induced contractions are horrible. Not trying to scare you, just hoping to be honest and sway you to asking your dct for more time. Oh, and my little one was born at only 6lbs 12 oz. She was a peanut, even though she stayed in so long. If I were in your shoes I'd reschedule the induction for 41+weeks and then just hope it happens before then!

My midwife said it's a proven fact that if they induce before 41 weeks that 50% end in cesareans. I did. I will regret the induction with my first forever. It was hell. If I had known more I would have waited.

I was induced 5 days before my due date, and it was the smoothest delivery I could have ever imagined. Literally the moment my son was born, I said that i could do it all over again. I had such a great experience. Don't fret the induction, embrace the fact that you will know when your baby will be arriving in this world!

Saird -- be careful of taking your stats from only one source. Many midwives have been known to exaggerate or selectively choose where they get their stats from to support their own opinion. While there is an increased risk of having to have a c-section if you are induced, part of that is due to the fact that those who *need* to be induced were already at risk regardless of the induction. The induction itself counts for about a 10% increase risk of needing a c-section from the sources I've heard. I was induced due to medical necessity at 37 weeks. I have nothing to compare it to, but it seemed to go pretty much as I'd expect labour to go.
