Group B Strep Test Was Painful

Hi ladies. I just saw a nurse pract_tioner for my 35 week appt and had my group b strep test done. It hurt like h__l! I had read up on this and everything pointed to this being no big deal, but it hurt really bad. The nurse asked me, "I DID get it in your va___a, didn't I?" I just stared at her, I was thinking to myself, "Where else would you put it?". Then she told me that she may have gotten it in my urethra, that that is where it is SUPPOSED to go and that she chooses to swab around it because of the irritation. I've urinated twice since then and it feels like I am peeing broken glass! I called the nurse and she said that my urethra may have been irritated that it should go away relatively soon. What the h__l?! Does this sound right to anyone else? Anyone else had this happen to them. Hopefully I won't have to see the n.p. again, my dr. was on vacation this week, so I couldn't see her.

OUCH!!! Do they do this test if you are having a c-section? I don't want it!

I'm not sure if they do or not...but I know it's not supposed to be painful. This wasn't the first bad experience with this particular n.p. She seems very rough when giving an exam. Today after the test she checked my cervix to see if it was dilated and she hurt me just as much as the first time she examined me at like 24 weeks.

I did not even feel my strep swab. The ob swabbed my v____a & rectum, and I didn't feel a thing. I don't think you are supposed to be in pain.....

ophelia, that is what I read was SUPPOSED to happen...I just went to the bathroom again and it seems a LITTLE better, so hopefully it will go away soon...but geesh! I am definitely going to tell my doctor about this at my appt. next week!

ouch! THe urethra is so small-no wonder it hurt! Keep that women away from your v____a!

xoxticiaxox - May 14

thats not right , i got my v____a and outside of my b___t swabbed. it shouldnt hurt.

MNMOM - May 14

That woman is crazy! They swab your v____a, not inside your uretha! She could have done some MAJOR damage!!!!!!

That is the craziest thing I've ever heard!!! They are NEVER supposed to swab the inside of a women's urethra like that. They may do that to MEN to test for some STD"s but those are 2 very dif areas!! I would call ur Dr. and tell him exactly what happened. And make sure u pay close attention to ur urination. If burning persists she may have introduced bacteria into ur urethra that could cause UTI or bladder inf. Good Luck!

Also, I just looked online and the CDC says the GBS test is a simple procedure to swab the Vagina and Rectum...nothing about urethra.

I had the test done 3 weekss ago and i didnt even know she was doing anything. i think you should ask her why it hurt the next time. tell her you have read a lot of stuff and no where does it say it should hurt.

Wow! It is NOT supposed to hurt like that...I didn't even feel it when I got swabbed. When your doc gets back, tell her asap! If it keeps hurting when you pee, I would go back and demand to see a doctor. That is rediculous! So sorry you have to deal with that!

Well ladies, it doesn't hurt as bad today to pee, just a little irritation. We had our birthing cla__s last night at the same clinic/hospital that I had the test done yesterday. I talked to the labor/delivery nurse about it and she was dumbfounded and even called up to L&D to talk to a dr. up there about it - both said that the urethra should never have been touched. I will definitely NOT be seeing Nurse Hell again and I will certainly talk to my doctor about it at my 36 week appointment on Monday!! Thanks for the comments!

They are only supposed to do RIGHT inside your v____a, and outside of rectum. Shouldn't have been painful at all, I had mine done yesterday, all pregnant women get it done at about 35 - 36 weeks. I'd definitely say something to your doctor.

I asked my OB today and she said that she does the test routinely but if I have it I won't be treated because if a c-section is planned and done before the water breaks it is not pa__sed to the baby. It is only pa__sed when the water breaks and the baby is exposed to outside germs in the birth ca___l and during the birth process. But they usually test all women in case their water does break so they know to treat you with antibitocs and if the baby is exposed. She also said that the only swab that is done is on the inside of the v____a and outside of the rectum and you barely feel a thing. I asked about the urethra and she said no not at all. They check the v____a and rectum, if it were in your urethra it would show up in the rectum or v____a. So I guess I will get the test, but not get treated as long as my water does not break!

I am in the same situation- I am having a C-section, but got tested anyway, just in case my water breaks. Unfortunately, I was positive for it:( Which I didn't even consider b/c I was negative with my son (14 months ago)

umm my dr did mine and it did not hurt at all. they just swipe a q~tip inside your lips of your v____a and not IN your but but right inside your cheeks you cant even feel it i think your dr is nuts lol
