I'm 35 wks today and just came back from an u/s. My dr ordered it because with my last u/s at 30 wks my baby was only measuring at the 22nd percentile for weight and she wanted to make sure he was staying on that curve since it was on the small side. I wasn't too worried because my first son was only 6lbs.3oz., so I'm not expecting this one to be big. But now he's dropped down to the 10th percentile, only 4 1/2 lbs, and I'm starting to worry. On top of that, every day for the past week or so I have periods of severe BH about 5 minutes apart, but they always stop eventually so I haven't been too concerned. Now I'm worried that maybe there's something wrong with the baby and it's going to bring on pre-term labour, and that's why the contractions have been getting so crazy. The technician said she would fax the results to my dr because she may want to see me soon (I don't have an appointment until next Thursday), but in the mean time I'm freaking out. Has anyone else been through this?

Hi Erin, I haven't been through this situation, but wanted to encourage you a bit! I'm 34 weeks today. I do know that from 35 weeks, the uterus doesn't stretch anymore. Do you know the position that the baby is in? Perhaps it has something to do with it. Otherwise, are the measurements proportional to each other?

Erin, I would also like to encourage you and tell you that the measurements of the baby are a guestimate and not always accurate. I have known to many women who were told their baby was measuring HUGE or SUPER TINY and their baby turned out just fine and dandy. I myself have been told my baby is in the 95th percentile and could potentially weigh 12 lbs!!! No one, and I mean NO ONE in my family or dh's family has ever had a baby that weighs more than 8 lbs 2 oz and that was me!! I think their intentions are good with trying to guess the size of your baby but sometimes they are just wrong and cause undo worry to you. Try to take a deep breath. Also, have they checked the placenta? If your baby truly is small for its gestation maybe your placenta is slowly breaking down (as it is supposed to do in late pregnancy) and your baby is not getting all the nutrition it should. Just a suggestion and a worthwhile question you may ask your OB. Good luck to you and I am sure your LO will be just fine. :)

Thanks so much for the encouragement :) I know that the measurements are not entirely accurate, and hopefully he's just a little on the small side and not actually to the point of being low birth weight. The fact that my first son was small is rea__suring, but you know how it is...you try not to overreact, but it's impossible not to be concerned about your baby! The good news is my fluid is good, his movement and position are good, and the blood flow through the cord is good. They didn't say anything about the placenta, but I'm sure they would have checked it (at least I hope so).

I hope everything turns out well and I am sure it will. As someone has already mentioned u/s's tend to be off on weight gain estimations. BTW what was his weight estimation at 30wks? considering babies tend to gain 1/2 lb a week in the 3rd tri your ds could very well end up weighing 6-6.5lbs at birth. I hope your doctor can clarify things for you and ease your mind. Keep yourself busy until then. Also, maybe try eating more high fat content foods until D-day to try fatten up your ds a little (milk, salmon, avocado, tofu, cashews/almonds ect.). Good luck!

At 30 wks they said he was 3lbs 1oz, so he hasn't quite gained as much as most babies. I know that growth slows down after about wk36, so I'll be happy if he gets up to 6 lbs. I had contractions 8-10 mins apart for about 2 hours today though, and that didn't make me feel any better. They've stopped though, now just getting lots of BH as usual.
