Can you explain what your baby's head was pressed against? Why did you think you were in "pre labor..." at 37 weeks...? Contractions and dilation and even effacement (thinning of the cervix) can begin weeks, months before actual "labor," and it doesn't mean that the onset of labor is happening. I am just confused. Sounds like if you weren't dialing or effacing as you say, then you weren't in labor.

I was having unbearable contractions every 30 seconds -2 minutes and had been for 2 days not to mention my water had broken.. When my doctor checked me once I was admitted to the hospital the amniotic fluid had been gone for so long I no longer had any sac left and therefore my daughters head was pressed firmly against my cervix without any barrier . . . to prevent infection etc..

Oh and I am not exaggerating by using the word unbearable. I lost consciousness a couple of times and began convulsing involuntarily at one point due to the pain.

Krissy - Congrats on your daughter - glad everything endly safely. I had something similar happen when I was induced - I lost all my waters at 36 weeks 4 days with my first baby. Went into hospital for examination and they confirmed waters had gone. By the way you can request an ultrasound to confirm waters have gone here if test result is not what you expected. I was 0cm and cervix was back. Was given 48 hours to go into labour naturally - which I could have done at home as I had no sign of infection as long as I measured my temperature regularly or in hospital. I chose to stay in hospital as it was my first child (with my second child - waters also broke before labour - I stayed home and went back when I was having regular contractions). 48 hours after my waters breaking I was still 0cm so they induced me. With my second I didn't go into labour unitl week 39 so if I'ld waited to go naturally it would have been 2.5 weeks or so with no waters. Everything I've read online says its best to be induced then. After first 24 hours (gel) still 0cm so then went on to the drip and eventually she came out - small but absolutely perfect and still is. Second child waters went first again but as I went into labour same day was able to have a water birth at hospital with a midwife. We have midwifes looking after us all pregnancy here and in hospital you midwife team will do your birth if there's no surgery/induction needed. We are taught to smell the waters to see if it your water - if it doesn't smell or smells slightly sweet it your waters. Normally it looks like a thin clear oil. Though when mine broke with my second I thought thats my waters smelt it thought thats my waters gave it my husband to smell and he went no thats urine. So had a shower and lots loads of my water then had to rush to hospital for tests who confirmed it was my waters.

Krissy2006 your case in a home birth situation would have been a simple hospital transport. In the over 200 home births my midwife has done, she has transported 2 NON EMERGENCY to the hospital. I have read hospital transports happen in about 3% of the time for one reason or another. If your water did indeed break, and your midwife would have known, then after about 18 hours of no progressing, and obviously before you were pa__sing out of pain, you would have been taken to the hospital.

I used a midwife with my dd shes 14 months now. All went great, all questions answered no gray areas. But I went to the hospital after my water had broke at 37 weeks. They made me stay laying on my back with moniters and an IV. Needless to say no I didn't progress within there allotted amount of time and got pitocin then it brought it on so hard and so fast that yes I had to have an epidural. They were extremely busy and had only one midwife on duty, so she didn't show up til right before I delivered. Delivery went wonderful and she was great. But I do agree with needless intervention, I was progressing slowly and comfortably but it wasn't fast enough for them. Now I'm pregnant with a boy and see the same midwives. I had to see a nurse pract_tioner this past time as my midwife wasn't available (military facility) and it sucked! She didn't measure me, told me that the baby is still flipping around in there thats why she couldn't tell me how he was laying : S. I'm 28 weeks and very small I can feel close to every movement, haha, he's not flipping. She told me to come back in 6 weeks! Well I spent Thursday at labor and delivery in premature labor, and now have to go back this week to make sure I haven't dialated anymore. When I told her how I was feeling she said oh well things happen early the 2nd time around its normal. Midwifes trust your instincts a lot more and listen to you!
