Okay, I went out today to buy the last few things I needed for my baby and I was stuck in the bottle section forever. There's so many different kinds. I was debating between the Avent ones, the Dr. Brown ones, and the Gerber NUK ones...I was also looking at the Playtex ones that have the drop in liner thing. There's so many! lol I was just wondering what you ladies had decided about bottles or what you've used in the past if you already have children because I have no idea which are best. I'd really really appreciate any input you ladies have. Thanks :)

I am going with the Born Free bottles this time. I don't want anything with BPA or thalates. Avent and Dr. Browns (which I did use with our first) do contail BPA. The packaging will tell you if the product is BPA free, and if you aren't sure, look for a number on the packaging and call right there in the store. That is what I did when I was shopping for new sippy cups for our 28 month old daughter. Canada has banned BPA for a reason and I just wonder how long it will take the US to admit there is a problem?!?! There are other less expensive options than the Born Free, but that is my what I am chosing to use.

hey samantha - I'm with mjvdec on this one, I registered for and got the Born Free plastic bottles. they are pricey at $10 a bottle, but I figure it's a 1 time purchase and they're worth it. I realize almost all plastics have BPA and I'm sure we all are exposed, but I just thought I didn't want to expose my little precious baby to it! hope that helps

STEF - they are super easy because after they sterilized they are top rack dishwasher safe!

You have to be careful with products that claim to to be BPA free, sometimes it is just the bottle or liner itself that is BPA free. You really have to do your research and call the companies and ask about all of the individual components ie the bottle, nipple, ring and any other parts like in the Dr. Browns. Also, be careful with pacifiers. I know for sure that the NUK with the silicone nipple are fine, but not the latex ones. As well the Soothie pacifiers are great too. They are a First Years product and also available at Babies"R"Us and a lot of grocery stores. I'm glad I could help.

After mjvdec put her response last night I stayed up till about 1 AM reading about all this BPA stuff! There's so many problems it can cause it's crazy! I'm thinking of going with the Playtex ones with the liners. It says the outer part of the bottle that holds the liner is made with the BPA but that it doesn't come in contact with the milk so it's okay. I'd really like to go with those Born Free or Green to Grow...but they're kind of pricey :| and I'm short on cash as it is. I actually found this really cool thing where you can text and find out what products have BPA in them. You text to 69866 and then you text in >> zrecs company name product for example you could text in zrecs gerber pacifiers or zrecs avent bottles and it'll send you a response that says what pacifiers from gerber have BPA and which don't. it's free so that's cool :)

Well, the BPA isn't even a problem if you DON'T MICROWAVE the bottles. If you put them in the hot water warmer then you shouldn't even worry about it. I nursed full time, but pumped once in a while to go out with dh, and I used the Avent bottles and the little bottle warmer that they make, worked great for me.

I know this is going to sound really dumb, but what exactly is BPA? I haven't gotten any bottles yet either...and I have no clue what to look for. This is my very first.

I started with Avent/Dr Browns then canned them all for BPA free having read all the press about it. I got the the "Born Free" ones from the online shope which are great - check the site though as recent increase demand means that delivery might not be quick . I believe MAM bottles are BPA free too and you can get them from mothercare.

All it takes to leach BPA is a run in the dishwasher, or a bottle sterilizer. It is also true that liquids just sitting in a container containing BPA over a matter of hours will leach, even if in the refridgerator. I would not recommend using a product that contains BPA wether the milk comes in to contact with it or not. You are handling the bottle itself, and eventually your baby will be holding it at feedings. There is a reason Canada's government issued the recall, and the store issued refunds for even used products. Also wanted to add, that not all #7 products contain BPA, and some of the lower #'s do contain BPA. If you look on the bottom of the bottle or container you can often find PP which stands for Poly Propolene (sp) - which is safe. I have spent days and days researching this and talking with our pediatrician. I am sure of my findings. You can take it or leave it.

MJVDEC - I've been trying to research to see which bottles that are BPA free are cheaper...I read on one article that just because the box says "BPA FREE" doesn't actually mean it's BPA free because as of now they're not required to put what is in their products so basically they can lie I guess. So all the gla__s one's are BPA free...but I'm not sure I want gla__s ones (I have no carpet in my entire house) and I was wondering if you knew about the Sa__sy MAM bottles. I read they were safe but who knows. I read that a lot of their pacifiers contained BPA but that their bottles didn't. It seems like you've been doing alot of research and reading on it and I was just wondering if you knew about them...? THanks

Question...if you clean the bottles in the dishwasher do you still need to sterilize? I'd been told no by a friend so I didn't even get a bottle sterilizer (especially due to the fact they go in the microwave). Basically I'd rather just wash in the dishwasher with everything else as it is easier. Oh, and my sister got me a set of Born Free bottles, which I will gladly accept and use, but I still lean towards the drop-ins for convenience.

Samantha, You have a few options. If you are willing to pay about $20 for a two pack of bottles then the easiest choice are the Born Free - which you can buy at Babies"R"Us, and they are plastic. if you want a cheaper option there is an evenflo that comes in a 3 pack - each of the three bottles is a different color, and the bottles really don't look like much. I have read conflicting reports on the MAM products. You should call the 800 # on the packaging and ask which of there products are really BPA free. If the operator hesitates in answering your question then just don't buy them. You have to remember that just about any bottle should be fine for your baby. The most important things are that they accept the nipple and that you remember to hold the bottle at a 45* angle at feedings to keep them from swallowing air. If I were you I would go to Babies"R"Us and look at the options they have there. You are also going to have this problem when you switch to sippy cups. The most affordable option for those are the Gerber Sip and Smile, and they are available everywhere. Be sure to stay away from NUBY. I hope this answers your question?? I am here if you have any more.
