Hello I am pregnant with twin boys in 27th week, recently I am diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes . my fasting level is 207 which is really very high. I am starting my meal plans and blood sugar checking from tomorrow. I am very worried about this as diabetes doesn’t run in the family and we have very active and healthy lifestyle. I am lacto vegetarian – we have milk and milk product but no meat, fish , chicken or eggs. Please share with me your experience on GD. I am totally confused about the meal plans and everything as I prity much eat the way they mentioned in meal plan –

I had it, I was diagnosed at 28 weeks. GD doesn't have to do with your lifestyle, it's all about hormones but do know that if you have GD you're predisposed to Type II later in life so you should continue that healthy lifestyle after you deliver your babies to avoid it. The best advice I can give is to test often and try to keep a food journal so you can see how different foods affect your blood sugar. One of the things that made my glucose levels soar was milk. Soy milk was slightly better but I wasn't really able to eat dairy. It's more trial and error than anything, after a couple weeks you'll know better what you can eat. I couldn't eat as many carbs as the meal plans said to and my doc was OK with it. I did make up for it by eating alot of eggs and meat to make up the calories, so you might want to discuss your options with your OB. I had more dietary options since I'm not veggie. If after a couple weeks your levels after meals are too high your OB will likely order medication to help control it. My levels normalized the morning after I gave birth. Good luck!!

Ive had GD with 2 of my pg so far, the last one I was on insulin 2 times a day, Im also checking my sugars now. I am pg with twins also. My sugars were high yesterday. I think your gonna have a harder time controling your sugars not eating protein. Even if you eat beans they have carbs in them. I agree with freebird that milk will make your sugars go up. It contains a lot of sugar. I too eat a lot of eggs, and meat especially if I eat a carb filled meal I make sure i balance it with protein. I eat low carb bread, which helps also. There are lots of diabetes based products you can eat/drink.Sometimes what you eat will have NOTHING to do with your sugars going up or down. I was eating well with my last pg and my sugars would still spike. thats why I had to start insulin, even then it wasnt controlled and had to up my dose. Its just the way your body processes the sugars we eat. I was also reading the other day that moms pg with mulitples have a higher chance of getting GD..Just the way it happens..I would talk to your dietician about being lacto-veggie and see if they have any advice for you..GL...GD isnt fun, but its doable.

Thank you Freebird and Lcoots, Today was my first attempt at measuring blood sugar. My fasting was 105 and after breakfast was 141. I just had one slice of toasted wheat bread without b___ter/ cheeze or peanutb___ter. I have to check it 4 times in a day so I guess within a week I will have clear picture about the whole thing, Thanks again fpr your advice.
