Well, I just got back from my Dr's appointment and we found out that I am not ovulating on the 50mg of Clomid and my DH's count came back at 5 million (low) as opposed to 50-150 million (normal limits). I am going to have to wait for AF again and/or do the Provera thing again because my cycles are not regular and then he is going to up my dose to 100mg of Clomid. The Dr said that we will only do 3 rounds total 50mg, 100mg, and 150mg, after that I have to go to a clinic in Lubbock, Texas for further procedures which included IUI. My questions are: Does anyone know the average cost of IUI (my insurance does not cover ART). Does anyone know of any success stories with this procedure - what exactly do I have to look forward to? Do they inject the sperm in with some kind of syringe or do they extract an egg and fertilize it? I am not sure what to expect. Please any advice or tips are welcomed and If someone out there is going through or has already gone through this will you please tell me what I am in for.

Hi, I conceived through IUI. Our procedure wasn't covered by insurance either and cost about $500 for the actual IUI, about $200 for the sperm wash and $200 each for ultrasounds to monitor for egg production and ovulation (I think I had 3). You'll also have to pay for whatever meds you use. The procedure itsself is not painful at all and actually pretty simple. I was on Clomid for mine and I monitored woth OPK sticks. When I got a positive OPK they checked me with the ultrasound to see how many follicles I had (I had 3) then they scheduled the IUI for the next day. Dh went to the lab and gave a sample which they prepared by washing out the fluids and loading it into a syringe. They gave it to me in an insulated container and I had to go directly to my RE's office where they injected the sperm into my uterus with the syringe. It really wasn't a big deal and was much more affordable than IVF which is where they remove the eggs and fertilize them. That's a much more involved and expensive procedure so alot of times docs will try IUI before moving on to IVF. Your doctor will explain the procedure to you and go over costs beforehand if they know your insurance doesn't cover it. Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your reply. Just one more question if you know: Since my husbands count is only 5, do you think they would even consider doing IUI? I have been reading where the procedure itself with a good count and ovulation only has a 6 - 26% success rate and under 10 they give it less than a 1% chance. Do you think it would be more feasible to spend a little extra (given the low percentage chance) to go with IVF rather than say 3 or 4 rounds of IUI's?

IUI is not THAT expensive. Mine too was about $500 and $200 for sperm wash. The sperm wash should actually increase your husbands count. We did our first IUI with 2 million and I got pregnant. Good luck

We did a few rounds of IUI with different meds & doses. We concieved our twins on Puregon injections, sperm wash & IUI. They are now 6wks old. In our home town the cost was an admin. fee of $400 & procedure fee (IUI & Wash) $750 plus the cost of meds. Hubby had an offer to work out of town for 6months. We went to a new clinic which cost us only $300 plus meds. I don't know of any insurance plans that cover the costs of procedures, only the cost of meds. At the 2nd clinic, my husband was allowed to "push the plunger", so to speak. We like to think it increased our chances! Good luck!

Hi Wantingmorebabies. My husband and I went through 2 rounds of insemination and were ready to move to IVF, but decided to try IUI one more time. I am now pregnant with quints. Although your husband's sperm count is low, they can actually do a proceedure which is called ICSE, that removes his sperm through a medical procedure. Dr. Sherman Silber in St. Louis specializes in this treatment...and has actually been successful in helping couples conceive when there is no sperm count. Going through fertiltiy treatments is extremely draining, both emotionally and financially...maybe you could give IUI one more try and then move to IVF. Take Care and Best of Luck!
