Well, here's my story-- I went to a fertility specialist and just asked for it! We're fortunate in that we can afford i/v/f, so we asked to voluntarily have it done for the purpose of multiples-- when the MD said no, I didn't stop there! Because I wanted to be monitored by an MD, ordering u/p was never an option. So, I thought I'd go to my MD and tell her we'd been ttc for 8 months with no luck to get the script. She ran tests, and low and behold, I NEED the stuff! I can't O on my own because of PCOS, so I'm now on Metformin 1500mg and will begin my first Clomid cycle in Jan 100mg. Also, what is very important to be monitored to achieve twins because while monitoring, they do intrav____al u/s, telling you how many follicles are ready and, thus, how many eggs you will release. If there are too many, don't try, and if there are two to three-- try away!!!! Also, I've added 1 baby aspirin a day, a prenatal V, epsom baths 3x a week, and visualize two eggs being released and fertilized!!! I'll keep you posted on what happens!
Do you know if you O naturally? If so, Clomid will help get more eggs out-- if not, you may need more than Clomid-- but again, get monthly u/s so you know!!! Good luck and twin baby dust to ya, girl!!!

There's no "recipe" for multiples.

No, Hmmm, there isn't-- but thanks to medical technology, there are ways to increase your chances-- that's what we're trying to do here.

To Me Want Twins - Did you ask the doctor why it wouldn't be a good idea to try for multiples?

Yes, I did-- he said that he was afraid of regulation here in the US, as it is in the UK. Right now, there is no limit in embryo transfer in the US so it is common to implant three or more during IVF. Because of this, there are loads of multiples, as you know, as well as a better chance of a pregnancy in general- the MD's in the US have higher success rates than those in the UK! The MD that I spoke with candidly told me that his success rates are within the highest in the country-- but his multiples rate is equally as high. He believed that with "abuse" (a potentially fertile couple who were willing to pay for IVF for the sole purpose of multiples) that legislation would be pa__sed here in the US limiting the number of embryos in transfer, and thus lessening success rates of IVF. Actually, I ASKED him about the risks of multiple births, and he said that because of medical technology, the risks were higher, but not that much higher (in twins, specifically). Obviously triplets compound the risks significantly, but our conversation was about twins, specifically. He then told me about Clomid and told me how to increase my chances of multiples that way-- thus, I'm trying it!

to Me Want Twins - So this MD is in favor of pregnancy at all costs? That in itself sounds like abuse to me. And he then encouraged you to take illegal clomid? Did it ever occur to you that there are reasons that most REs follow the ASRM standards and limit embyos transferred? That multiple pregnancies should not be strived for because of ethical and moral reasons? BTW you can easily check RE's success rates. They're readily available and not "candidly" given information.

to Me Want twins - you say you specifically want twins - and what if by some act of nature the "twins" you may concieve split and become quadruplets - then what???? What would you do then? Then all of your risks skyrocket and the babies and yourself may be in danger. Think about what you are trying to do if an MD didn't want to help you concieve multiples it is for good reason and leave it alone. Clomid can cause problems w/your ovaries, etc., not to mention the hormonal jump your body is going through for - in your case - no good reason.

I am a prescribie, as Ellie says. I'm not taking clomid u/p nor am I doing so unsupervised. Actually, I'm doing so because of PCOS (diagnosed by two independent MD's, BTW) and am getting u/s monthly to see how many eggs are being released, if any. This page is for P clomid- thus I'm on it. Please don't judge me or a__sume what I am doing with my body-- feel free to ask, but don't a__sume. Actually, if you read up-- the FIRST thread on this page, I explain my situation!!! So, yetanothertripletmom, are you proving what so many women are saying about you on this site? That you're making judgements without actually knowing any facts? Sounds more ignorant than those doing research to take clomid, u/p or p.

Actually this forum is for "Twins and Multiple Birth." I am sorry I missed the prescribed part of your clomid use. Though I still stand by my other comments. Transferring more embryos than the ASRM standard is unethical. I have done more than my share of research on multiples, fertility drugs and treatments, and high-risk pregnancy. I've done the research and I've walked the road.
