Hi, I am 32 years old and 21 weeks pregnant with fraternal twin boys. I went for a level 2 sonogram last week and there were 2 findings. Baby A has a slightly dilated kidney, and baby B has a echogenic foci - bright spot. Although my doctor said he not too concerned, I am worried sick. From what I've read these are 2 soft markers for DS. My question is, does anyone know if one soft marker on each twin is considered like 2 markers, or just 1 on each twin? I did not have the AFP or amnio testing done. Doc said everything else on the ultrasound looked good. I am so worried, I could not sleep last night. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

It would only be one soft marker for each twin. I wouldn't worry (easier said than done) becuase they need a whole bunch of soft markers to even start thinking it is down syndrome. I have been on baby boards for years and have seen many ladies have soft markers on their u/s only to have everything turn out fine. I have seen your types of soft marker many, many times and all turned out well. My question is, how do they know they are fraternal? If they are in seperate sacs a placentas but are both boys, they still could be identical. We didn't know my boys would be fraternal until one got blue eyes and the other brown and they started to look different. About 1/3 of identicals don't share sacs or placentas.

Thank you so much for your answer. I suppose they don't know for sure that they are fraternal, but presume, since everything is separate. I will try to relax.

Anyone with one baby and multiple markers??? No one else seems to have any words of wisdom. I am due with a boy in February and they found 4 markers. I am trying to find out if my doctors are following the best protocal or if I need to be pushing for more. thanks!!

Hi AJSMOMMY. I have read posts of women with 3 or 4 markers and the baby turned out to be fine. Which markers does your baby have? Also, how far along are you and have you had any of the tests done (afp, amnio, etc). I have come to the conclusion that you can either go through your pregnancy worried sick, or try to relax - it is a great fight! But I am working on it. I also feel that there is far too much information on the internet, we scare ourselves silly. Keep us posted.

EMUNAH, I'm sorry, I know how frustrating this can be. Once you find out there is even a chance of your babie(s) being sick most times you go thru the stages of grief just as if the child had pa__sed. I only know this b/c I went thru it. At our 20 week U/S they told us the AFP was so high that our daughter's chance of having DS was 1/24, and I was only 27 (barely). We were devistated, went for level 2 and they said she looked normal and we refused the amino. We cried and felt every single emotion you could imagine. We then decided that we needed to make the best of the info we had which was very little, and love each other and our other children. Kamryn Avery Breitenstein was then still born at 38 weeks from cord entanglement and looked perfect, no sign of Down's. So I hope this gives you some hope as to how often the tests are WRONG...ours was. GL for you and your boys

My neighbour has fraternal twins which were born 8 weeks ago. He little boy had the bright spots (or water spots) and is prefectly healthy. He did end up having bow legs, but they are in the process of casting, and already he is doing very well. I hope that helps a bit. Most times, these "spots" dissappear. Good luck.

I jsut wanted to add, the little boy was thought to have some intestinal problems as well (which is another marker for down's) and this week we found out he's just got reflux. Sometimes, you just have to trust that the ultrasounds are not always 100%.
