My friend's baby is 18 mos old and is feeding on the hour. For instance, he will eat from 9 to 9:20 and then start again at 10. She is going crazy and I don't want her to wean. Any suggestions. She tries everything to calm him down before feeding. He also refuses to take a pacifier.

That's pretty frequent for 18 mos. isn't it? Why don't you want your friend to wean him? I would think 18 mos. is plenty. Most people only b___stfeed for 6mos to a year so I think your friend did very well. In any case check to make sure he doesn't have gas, he may be confusing gas with hunger pains. I had to stop eating dairy becasue the lactose was causing my daughter severe gas and she was thinking they were hunger pains and was wanting to eat all the time. I stopped eating dairy, the gas was reduced and she didn't want to eat all the time.

I'm really sorry - I meant 18 weeks not 18 months. I'm pregnant and my mind has been elsewhere. sorry for not being more clear.

My son is almost 7 weeks and he'll nurse on each side for 20 minutes and then want to nurse again like 30-60 minutes after finishing. I only lasted 2 weeks before I needed a solution. I felt way to guilty to quit so I started pumping. I pump 5 x's a day and he nurses 2-3. I have to give him formula here and there if I run low or if I need to be somewhere. I use Nestle Good Start and he does great with it. His pediatrician said this is fine.

He may be nursing for comfort or going through a growth spurt. If he's sick or teething he will nurse more often. If he needs to increase her supply, he will nurse more often. Give it a couple of days. If it's a growth spurt, her supply will have caught up by then. If he's sick or teething, you'll know it in a few days. Good luck.

thanks ladies. I should have mentioned that he has been feeding this way pretty much all along, so it's not a growth spurt, but good thought. I think he is just snacking like someone else mentioned on the other board I posted on.

My son is now 12 weeks old. In the first 10 weeks he was also eating every 1 to 2 hours the whole day and night (now it is every 2-3hours). It got to a point that I pa__sed out with him in my arms in the middle of the night (he was OK) with no energy... I decided to supplement with formula since it was not physically feasible for me. I b___stfeed him 90% of the time, and give formula here and there -- I use similac with iron and DHA. The reason for his hunger, I found out, was that he was born small (7lb 1/4) because I am skinny, but he was catching up since his father and I are very tall (5'9" and 6'3"). He doubled his weight in two months and went from the 50% percentile in the charts in terms of length to the 90% percentile (bigger than 90% of the population).
My advice to her are:
1) only offer one b___st until the end of each feeding -- the first milk is more watery while as he keeps suckling the fat milk comes out -- this is the one that has more calories and will support him for longer time. If she switches b___st, he will eat mostly the watery milk from each of the b___st, and much less of the fat milk.
2) If you express milk, have a bottle ready by your side. Once he seems done with the feeding, offer the bottle to top off and make sure he eats all he can.
I think with these he should be able to last at least 2:30 hours.
Good luck
