How often should I pump if I just need the occassional bottle? Do I need to pump everyday(to keep in practice?) Also can you mix milk from different pumping sessions? Thanks!

I was told by a children's hospital that if you are freezing your milk that you can just pour new milk on top of the frozen milk to add to it.

Jamie - October 4

I pump once a day, and never more than 4 ounces at a time. I usually do it in the morning, because that's when I have the most milk; I will nurse the baby on one side, and pump the other, until I have 4 ounces; then I stop pumping. (I get serious engorgement issues if I pump more than 4 ounces, because it overstimulates my production) I split the milk into storage bags, 2 oz each, mark the date and amount, and refridgerate it for about 1/2 an hour, then it goes into the freezer. I store it in 2 ounce increments because I've never given her a bottle, and sitters/dad report that she'll take anywhere from 6 to 8 ounces. 2 ounce increments are easy/quick to warm, and at the most, only 1 ounce will get wasted. Now, as far as mixing pumping sessions - I wouldn't do that while storing/freezing it, but it's fine when serving it. Breastmilk contains different nutrients in different quant_ties at different times of the day. Also, it breaks down while being refridgerated/frozen/thawed. It's still safe and nutritious, but b___st milk that has been frozen for 30 days does not have the same level of nutrition as b___st milk that's been frozen for 3 days. But, if you're just talking about pumping 4 times in one day, then yes, feel free to just mix it...but I wouldn't mix a pumping session today with one from last week until I was serving it.

to ME - i wastoldto never add new milk on top of frozen milk. since you cant refreeze milk, putting new milk on it can cause bacterial problems. this is what i was told and read everywhere online.
