Nipple Shields

My baby is 7 weeks old and I'm still using a nipple shield to br___tfeed. My milk supply is fine and he is thriving, in fact in the 75% percentile of weight and height. My question is, why do people think nipple shields are a bad idea? I have little nipples and he can't latch on without the shield. If he does latch on, he falls off constantly and gets really cranky. Who else has used a shield? And how long.

I used them for the 1st month and they helped with my flat nipples. I got some help from a lactation consultant. She said that once the nipples got used to being pulled I wouldn't need the shields anymore. They come out now on their own when I nurse.

It doesn't sound like you need nipple shields. They aren't supposed to be for increasing size. Size really doesn't matter. What happens if you don't use them? Who told you you needed them?

He was born two weeks early and wouldn't nurse at all, so my nurse gave me a shield on the second day. I've been using it ever since, although i got a bigger one so more of my nipple is drawn out. My nipples never did come out on their own. Is it because I keep relying on the shield? What's the big deal if I keep using it? Will it affect him in the long run or what is what I'm wondering.

Nipple shields are a wonderful invention. I had very large, flat nipples; for the first 2 weeks, I pumped and bottlefed...then I met with a lactation consultant who gave me a shield...I used that for the next 2 months; I would probably still be using it if my husband hadn't lost it...I had no choice but to get my daughter to latch on the natural nipple that night - we've been going strong ever since. You will know when you no longer need the nipple shield; and, remember, even if you continue to use it for the rest of the time you nurse, your baby is still getting that wonderful mom's milk, and is still getting the bond of nursing with you, whether he's latched to a shield or to you - he doesn't know the difference.

Thanks Jamie, that's what I was hoping. :)

I read that your milk might not come in as good because there isn't as much skin to skin contact. I used one for a few months and I had no problems with my milk coming in. If it wasn't for the shield, I would not be b___stfeeding. My son would not latch on to my flat nipples. He would scream and I got so frustrated. After a couple of months I would try every couple of times to get him to latch on without it. All of a sudden my nipples were no longer flat and he would latch right on. It's nice not to have to use it anymore but I agree that it was a great invention.
