i'm 5'5" and 210 #'s and pregnant with our first baby (totally excited!!!) however, my excitement is dampened when i hear about what a difficult pregnancy i'm going to have because im overweight. i have been searching for information about "how not to gain too much weight during pregnancy" and only come up with "you should get to a health weight prior to pregnancy"... help, advice, and encouragement needed. thanks ;)

I was overweight before getting pregnant. However, I was seeing a dietician and exercising and lost about 20 lbs before getting pregnant, but was still overweight when we conceived. I lost about 12 lbs before I gained anything back. I was 181.5 in May at my first prenatal apt and I am not 181 at 35 weeks pregnant. My Dr. says I'm right on track and the baby is growing perfectly. You really just have to think about the health of the baby and make the right food choices and excercise if you can. I have had not one problem during my pregnancy. My blood pressure and glucose have always been right on. Don't listen to what other ppl say about it being difficult b/c mine has not been. I have just stayed on top of everything and only splurged occasionally. You will be just fine. Just remember that sometimes someone who is overweight to begin w/, won't gain weight for quite a while and the Dr. will tell you that is perfectly normal. Hope I helped a little. But more than anything, enjoy your pregnancy. And Congratulations!! It was obviously meant to be, and meant to be for right now.

You're welcome and I'm sorry for all the added answers after my original. I think you will be just fine. And believe me, I have not just ate all the good stuff during this pregnancy I have def. splurged plenty and am still fine. I say give in to your cravings but in small amounts and you'll be fine. Keep us updated! How far along are you??

I'm not overweight but I wanted to tell you that I have several family members and friends who were overweight and preggy and not one of them had any problems. I can honestly say I didnt really see that they gained much weight at all. My bet is you wont gain much.

Hi, I was really glad to see your post since this is an issue I dealt with throughout pregnancy. I was overweight before I conceived (5' 9" and 220) and delivered a healthy baby girl one month ago. I had minimal complications (my liver enzymes were slightly elevated) and generally had a comfortable pregnancy. During my pregnancy I gained about 15 pounds, I tried to eat healthy (most of the time), large flake oatmeal for breakfast, honey instead of white sugar, whole wheat bread, lean chicken, veggies. I also have a job that requires lots of outdoor walking so I walked probably a mile or two, 4 to 5 days a week in 7 and 8th months. As long as you eat relatively healthy and exercise a couple of times a week (don't overdo it if you don't feel great) I think you will be fine! I mean it's not the best thing to be overweight before pregnancy, but there are many other worse things!

My son is almost 14 months old now. I was 234 lbs. when I found out I was pregnant. I gained 41 lbs. during pregnancy without trying. My absolute best advice to you is to cut way down on or eliminate your salt intake. I was so puffy and swollen almost my entire pregnancy. I really cut down on the salt at about 7 or 8 month preg, and I am still not adding salt to my food (except popcorn!). All my preg weight was gone by 5 weeks postpartum. I think it was due to b___stfeeding and that it was mostly water weight. Try to eat as healthily as you can! PS - I had no complications, no morning sickness at all, and a very easy pregnancy. Good luck to you!
