Is anyone familiar with what hypoglycemia is and how to control it? I had some episodes of in my non-pg state, but not very often. Now that I’m pg, I seem to be having more and more episodes. My doc didn’t seem concerned about it and told me to eat peanut butter toast in the morning and I should be fine. I had an episode today and I don’t understand why. I had a bowl of Total cereal this morning at about 7:30a and then at about 9a, I had a couple of warm beef sticks at work (I work in a meat plant). By 10:30a I was shaking uncontrollably. I grabbed my peanut butter and crackers and ate those but the shaking wouldn’t stop. So then I had a glass of milk, it still didn’t stop so I had a couple of sugar cookies. I didn’t think it was ever going to stop, but after about an hour the shaking finally has stopped, but now I have a headache and the chills and my stomach is aching from everything I just put in it. I just can’t believe this can be good for me or my baby. Can anyone tell me what I can do to avoid these fits, and what to do when they happen? They seem to take a lot out of me and now I’m just exhausted. Any help is appreciated!!!

I have been hypoglycemic since hig school. The most important thing is to NEVER skip meals and always have snacks throughout the day. When an attack hits, suck on some hard candy to bring your blood sugar back up. Also avoid really sugary stuff normally because elevating your blood sugar can cause it to fall quickly.

I've been hypoclycemic since high school also, and same as jcross said, but instead of hard candy I normally have a cup of OJ.

Oh also I eat 6 small meals rather than 3 average size meals. That way my blood sugar stays at a normal level.

That's what I thought I did. It actually seems to be worse if I eat more often? I know that sounds weird, but when I fast (like when testing for diabetes) my blood sugar level is fine. It's when I eat and then don't eat again for a couple of hours. Or if I eat something sugary and then don't eat for a couple of hours I start shaking. But sometimes it seems to come on no matter what I do. How long does it take for the hard candy or OJ to work for you guys? And once you're system gets back to normal do you feel drained? Headeachey and weak?

Hmm, that is weird. Well when my levels are low, and I drink OJ, it helps me feel better pretty fast. When my levels are high and I eat cheese or peanut b___ter it takes closer 45 min to an hour. Maybe you could meet with a diet_tion or something. That's what I had to do, and she outlined exactly how many carbs, how much protein and everything. Once I was put on a strict diet my blood sugar has been very manageable. I don't feel drained once my sugars, and normal, and same with weak. My headache does stay though. I hope I can help somewhat...sorry you are feeling so bad.

I also have hypoglycemia. If you eat a protein and a carb at each snack, it really helps. Like cheese and crackers, or peanut b___ter crackers. The carbs break down fast, and the protein takes longer so it leaves your sugar level for a while. Also I feel like that if I don't have enough water or if I have chocolate or caffiene, especially on an empty stomach!

I have had it in the past and had a couple of episodes while pregnant. I figured out that I had been eating sweets during the holidays and I think that is what caused it. I also skipped breakfast the time that I had it the worst. I would try to cut out sweets and eat a lot of protein. That seems to be working for me. I am also eating three balanced meals a day.
