The Soda Issue

I give my 3 year old diet soda, and this is why: She's in the 95th percentile for height and weight, so obviously she gets all the calories she needs. An 8 oz glass of apple juice has 110 calories and 28g of sugar. My daughter usually drinks two cups of milk, one cup of juice, and four cups of diet soda each day. If I gave her juice all day instead of the diet soda, that would be an extra 440 calories each day, which she doesn't need. I'm not going to cause my daughter weight problems just so that some well-meaning stranger doesn't decide I'm white trash...I personally don't care much what people think of me, I just wanted to explain that there is a valid reason for giving my daughter diet soda, and it has nothing to do with the cost of juice.

Youi might want to reconsider giving diet soda to your child.... I have done a lot of reading up on this....there has been a lot of research lately on the health effects of aspartame (the artificial sweetner used for most diet sodas). There is some evidence that excessive amounts of this sweetner could be a cause of autoimmune diseases.. also although your daughter is at ahealthy weight now... in the long run drinking diet soda could actually lead to weight gain.. check out the book "Natural Cures 'They" Don't Want You To Know About" by Kevin Trudeau. Aspartame is an addictive substance. My daughter, also 3 years old... does not drink juice just because she doesn't like it .... water is very important and I did not notice that on your list of beverages for your daughter... my little girl drinks a lot of water... she especially loves it when it is really cold with ice in it.. and you can add a little fruit juice to it if your child is too used to having something sweet to drink. Soda (regular NOT diet) is a special treat... she gets 1/2 cup on pizza night. I do not mean to judge you and I hope you do not take it that way but... maybe you could just look into what I am telling you. Best of health to you and your family. :)

Jbear sounds like your doing a great job from some of the other posts I have read. I agree who cares what others have to say. I don't even think this post is necessary, just keep doing what your doing! Happy parenting!

Each is own!!!! I prefer not to give my children soda. Everyone have their own opinions. I agree with ChrissyR. Water is very important. My boys drink water, milk, and/or half juice/water when they are need something to drink..You really have to watch the soda intake in the summer. Kids get dehydrated easily in the hot sun. Soda make dehydration worst. It is always best to give your child water to keep him or her hydrated... ...I make fruit smoothies. Kids love that stuff.......JBear, I wouldn't worry about what people think. If you feel like you are making the right decision, keep giving her soda. Good luck!!!!.....Oh, try the smoothies!!!! Its easy. You mix fruit and ice in a blender. Very tasty, even my nephew like it. He only drive sweet drinks( its not diet). So, if i can get him to drive it, any child will try it...heeheeeheee

The only liquid (apart from milk) i gave my kids up to the age of 3 was highly diluted apple or pear juice, just so that the water didn't taste too bland. I think too many kids drink soda and sweetened fruit juices, which actually makes them thirstier in the summer time. They happily drink water and I will only buy fizzy drinks for birthday parties etc. Kids get enough sugar in their every food intake as a lot of foods contain high levels of sugar and salt.

What about water? A child really needs water. Our dentist says it's not the sugar on soda that rots teeth, but the carbonation. I hope you are brushing her teeth really well. I know you are concerned about the calories in juice, but you can water it down.

Jbear!!!! Jbear!!!!....Hey, have you changed your mind about soda?? Come to our side....heeeheee...LOL

Hey, KEEKEE, did you know you can freeze some of the fruit for the smoothie? I make one with frozen banana slices, milk and a little bit of peanut b___ter. As far as water, the water I get from the faucet smells like gasoline. It's supposed to be better than the average city water supply, because it's from an aquifer. I can't even cook pasta in it. So I buy bottled water, and as soon as I bring it home, someone pours it in the fish tank (and that's the only thing he will do around the house). It's gotten to be a joke. I guess a part of my problem is that I would rather die of thirst than drink plain water, and I guess I've pa__sed that along to my daughter.

Water is really important. It's also important to have kids get a taste for it early on so they're not used to sweetened stuff all the time. I do not give my son soda, and don't plan on it until he's much older, however I'm not putting anybody else down. It just seems that 4 cups of diet soda (and I agree w/ChrissyR about the artificial sweeteners) seems like a lot. Why not try cutting it down? I give my son 2 cups of milk and 1 cup of juice mixed with water and the rest of the time he gets regular water. He loves it. Just a thought, not a put-down!!

I was recently in SA, I remember seeing a news report about how they have some of the best water in the state--better than bottled even. Why does yours suck? I don't honestly don't remember it being all that great (certainly better than Houston's), but the water from the Caverns was!

Hey Jbear!!!! Yes, I do freeze my fruit smoothie. Avery and jordan love anything with fruit in it. My kids eat anything. They're greedy.....heeeheee...Have you tried to run your water for 5 minutes each morning before drinking or cooking with the tap water? It helps remove all the lead out and it taste better to me. Also you can buy the water filter. I have one and now worry less about what's in the water. Try giving your daughter water with frozen fruit and/or juice cubes. I also tricked my nephew into drinking water. I told him "water makes you strong like his uncle and dad." Now he ask for water....heeeheee.......Smooches!!!!!!!

I would never allow my toddler to drink soda. My mother gave her some...and i was really upset. and told her off. I dont think its healthy. I buy ONLY 100%% apple and orange juice for my two toddlers. And they drink alot of milk. (somtimes to change the taste ill put a drop of stawberry quick syrop) and they have a cup of water to got bed. I mean..as long as your toddler eats healthy i dont think you should worry about the calories....ZEventually your todler will have very bad cramps from drinking the Soda. And bad teeth. But like others said each his own

there are dangers in giving aspartame to children but obviously you don't seem to care about that. wow

Jamie - October 4

Hey, if your daughter does okay with soda, more power to you, and I'm sure my kids will be jealous. 8-) My daughter isn't going to have soda for as long as I can avoid it; I have a hereditary metabolic disorder that prevents me from processing sugars correctly - I'd like to prevent her from developing the same disorder, as much as I can, so no empty calories like soda and candy; also, my husband is allergic to artificial sweeteners, so I'm not gonna run the risk of giving her diet soda. Jbear, have you considered what the effects of caffeine might be? Or do you give her a caffeine-free diet soda?

to k - October 4

what are the dangers of aspartame? And is it found in Strawberry Quick?
