I had an epidural but I was able to sense when I had to use the BR so they just gave me a bedpan. They only put the catheter in long enough to drain my bladder one last time b/c my bladder was full and the nurse said that an empty bladder may give the baby more room. She was right. After they drained my bladder my labor progressed and the catheter was only in for about 2 mins.Of course it wasn't that bad b/c I couldn't really feel it but without the epi they are pretty uncomfortable.

I went in to the hospital at 8:00 in the morning used the bathroom myself, but in the middle part of the day I had an epidural and I couldn't urinate. I tried a bedpan and that didn't work so they did the catheter I didn't feel it then so it didn't hurt so much, but after I had my baby I was starting to hurt and tried to go and the epidural had worn off so I felt it when they put the catheter back in and it hurt like hell. The stupid nurse left it in all night and she shouldn't have done that, she could've taken back out.

I had an epi and a catheter also. But I didnt even know that they put the catheter until my 2 week pp appointment because I told the ob that it hurt a little when I peed, he said it was because of the catheter. Wow, I didnt even know. But after labor peeing didnt hurt, it started hurting a bit days after.

you need a catheter for c sections where they give you a spinal and if you have an epidural during labor...they hurt a bit inserting..it is like a sting..and then you feel like you have to go to the bathroom really bad and you cant but after about 5-10 minutes you get use to it and then no big deal!

I was told I would get a catheter if I wanted an epidural. However, I am goign to ask to just use the bedpan.

I had an epidural, which didn't take completely, but that's another story. Anyways, I was also worried about the catheter, but I didn't even feel it go in and it wasn't painful at all. They took it out when I was ready to push and it was really no big deal. You will find that a bedpan will get to be a pain, as it is difficult to move around, and even lift your bottom, when you are in active labor. Best of luck though!
