I would really like to go to a childbirth class with my DH, but have heard from people who have been that it's a waste on time and it didn't help them at all. I'm one of those people who want to prepared as possible, but also know that there's nothing to really prepare you for what will happen. If you've been to a class, did you feel it was a waste of time?

Hi Melissa!
I say go- My husband and I went the first time around, he went kicking and screaming but he still went. When we left we laughed that we wasted an entire Sunday but when my water broke and we were in the hospiatl we realized we learned more then we thought. We understand the terms the nurses were using and I had an idea of what was going on. I have to admit I never used the breathing method they tought us but over all I think it was worth going to. Hope this helps you a bit- Good luck!!!!

Hi melissa, I went and loved it. My hubby also learned a lot from it. You'll find the right technique for you when that day happens. Again, I learned a lot from it and would recommend it to everyone. Good luck with everything!!

i didn't go to one with either daughter. instead i took a tour of the hospital. i felt knowing where i would be would put me more at ease. instead i bought a book on natural birth to get an idea of apin and pain management ideas. i also bought the book what to expect the first year and read up on the sections about coming home with baby and the first month. i felt extremely prepared. i guess if you have the money for a cla__s then maybe but i really didn't and prefered to buy some other baby items instead of the cla__s.

Well--I'm not going natural, so if they focus on breathing techniques during natural childbirth it would be a waste for me. But I will definitely take the tour of the hospital.

We went to a cla__s offered at the hospital. They covered everything from pain relief to breathing techniques to baby care and CPR. They also had a tour of the maternity ward. It was taught by two of the nurses, so we already knew some people when the day came. We did use a few things they taught us... for example, they said if I started pushing before I should, to stick my tongue out. In labor I realized I was pushing before the midwife was in the room, told dh and he said "stick your tongue out!" (It worked too.) It's also a good way to clue your partner in about things too gross to tell him yourself, like the mucous plug. Even if you don't plan on going natural, it's good to know the breathing techniques in case the going gets rough before the anesthesiologist arrives. Bradley method and Lamaze focus on breathing, relaxation and natural childbirth, but if your hospital offers a cla__s, I recommend it.
