Once you start to dilate, approx. how long after can you expect to go into labor?

I started to dilate 2 weeks ago and haven't gone into labor.

this past tuesday i went to get an internal exam. i am 34 weeks. my doctor said that i have already dropped and that i am 1.5 centimeters dilated. he told me it is possible to be dilated for up to 6 weeks with out any sign of contractions or anything
