depends on your dr. My dr said i could have it when i want...2 or 8 cm dilated.

i had epidural pretty far into my first labour it was alfull they caught a nerve in my bak and almost paralised me i then cudnt move about much for bout a week and had a head ache like u wudnt believe it felt like my head was gona explode i had trouble bonding with my daughter becos i cudnt even lift my head off the pillow most of the time and 14 yrs on i still suffer with my bak now

It depends on how fast the baby is coming. If you're having a long drawn out labor and are holding at 8-9 cm you may still have an epidural but if the contractions are close, powerful and you feel the need to push there just isn't time. I waited too long to ask for the epidural but I'm really glad I did because I didn't take any chances with my back or nasty side effects.
