Long story short... My wife and I moved four months ago but still are having the baby in the city we used to live in.( 4 Hrs away). She's about to be 37 weeks, and last week at the appointment the doctor said she's 1 cm dilated and "soft" and "Isabella" wll be coming early. She's also had lotsof cramps/tightening in the last weeks. So Question- This week should I just tell my wife to stay there? How long does it take for this to happen? Anxious and starting to get nervous..

Is this your wife's first child? If it is, delivery can take many many hours. A lot of women are 2 and 3 cm dilated for a few weeks before delivery. Also do you know if she has lost the mucus plug? If she has, THATS when I'd tell her to stay.

Well, it's hard to say. My mom was 4cm dilated and 80% effaced at her 36 week appointment (they told her to pack her bags and get ready for labor) but she ended up carrying me until she was 41 weeks (a week overdue!). But, better to be safe than sorry. I'd probably have her settle there. Congrats and good luck!

I was 2+ cm for about two weeks.... and I lost my mucus plug a whole week before my son was born. So really it depends on the baby. Sorry, I know that isn't what you want to hear! I guess unless she had a medical reason she needed to be to the hospital early (like if she' Group B Strep positive), I wouldn't worry about it too much. Would she have to stay at the hospital? That seems expensive and not very comfortable. In that case I'd stay home until she really thought she was in labor. Most women have more than 4 hours before the baby comes. (That being said, my mom barely made it from our rural town to the hospital both times she went into labor.... so you need to do what feels right.) Oh, and don't be afraid to call an ambulance if you need one! It's much better to give birth in an ambulance with medical a__sistance than to attempt to drive and have to pull over to have the baby in the back seat of the car. I know, that's gonna scare you more, lol sorry, but a good friend actually had her baby in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. So if you need to, do it. That's what they are for. Good luck, I'm sure everything will go fine and you'll have plenty of time.

TRUE and good advice. Yet, know that the ambulance is going to take her to the nearest hospital, certainly not one hours away.

I was dilated and efaced for about 6 weeks before my daughter arrived and the contractions started 2 days before her arrival ... it really just depends on the mom and the baby. Isabella will arrive when she is ready - whether mom and dad are or not :)
