When you give birth, do most places require that you have an IV? I think they do for an epidural, but what about if you don't have one?
(I am wondering about hospitals in the U.S)

Most hospitals usually try to give you an IV, but they are NOT necessary if you are not getting an epidural. I plan on not getting an IV unless absolutely necessary. They will try to talk you out of it of course & tell you all the scary stuff that could happen as a result of not getting an IV but in the end, it is your decision. All they put into it is some sugar water anyway to keep you hydrated - they just charge a couple of hundred dollars for it.

Hi-the main reason other than hydration, is that if something happens, God forbid, and they need to administer drugs quickly, this is how they do it. It is kind of for the well being of all- a just in case. They hurt, yes, but I wouldn't turn one away-if something happens and they can't treat you properly, something bad could happen to you and the baby-they don't tell you to scare you at all-they're letting you know that if something happens-you made th decision and they tried to convince otherwise, it's their job.

if it were a life threatening issue, IV's would be administered no matter what you say. But apparently it's not, so I'm not getting one either. I plan on not having an epidural, I heard they slow contractions down.

Thanks, Gals.
Maddie, I've read some other things you've posted. We agree on alot of things. I just wondered if this is your first pregnancy?

Please check with your doctor. I did not want an IV either (and no epidural) and I was told the hospitals in Nashville would not admit you without hooking up an IV. My doctor also refused to deliever my baby without an IV. She said if I started to hemorrhage they would not be able to locate a vain and I would probably die, seems that they don't want the liability. She said if I was that set against an IV I would have to go to have it at home or a clinic with a mid-wife.

Hey Daisy Jean....Yeah, this IS my first pregnancy, at 21 yrs. old. I've been doing tons of reading and researching on various topics like natural birth, and b___st feeding. How about you?

Hi, Maddie.
I am not pregnant. We aren't going to start trying until next Spring (hubby insists on waiting). From what I have read, natural seems like the best way to go- just not sure if I can handle it. I am 32. I am definitely planning to b___stfeed! What do you think about episiotomies?
