Hi everyone, I just had my baby 10 days ago, and I thought that I would put some minds at ease. We've often discussed inductions and epidurals on this forum, and I just wanted to share my experience with both. I was induced on November 18 and found that the induction was very successful because I was already 2 cm dilated and 75% effaced. They used pictocin, and it took about 1 1/2 hours for me to feel the first contractions. I was able to stand the contractions for awhile, but then got an epidural because they got too intense for my wussy self, and after I got it, I progressed quickly in dilation. The doctor and nurses said that epidurals often have a bad rap, and they more often in their experience speed up dilation because the mother can relax and let nature take its course, rather than tense up with every contraction which can slow it down (which it did with me.) I know there are differing opinions on all this, I just hope that this helps. Everyone has to do it their way of course, but I found that with a certified anesthesiologist doing my epidural, and careful monitoring of all progress, I had nothing to worry about and it became a good experience.

Yeah I had a wonderful induction with pitocin! I breathed with the contractions, didn't need an epi till I was 4 cm, but I really needed it, not that it mattered much because I still felt half the contractions, but apparently dealt with them beautifully =)! I had no back pain the next day, no nothing from the epi. And I gave birth at 12:25 PM, the pitocin started at 6 AM.

hi i was induced and had a epidural and im pretty much the same as you guys, everything went fine. iv heard epidurals can slow your labour and make it hard if you cant feel when to push but i could still feel slight contractions so i was fine. i had no back pain the next day but i did get discomfort straight after i gave birth and as soon as they took out the needle in my back it went away. i didnt suffer from any side effects but i have a close friend who did and swears never to have a epidural again. she had severe headaches for about a week. but was just wondering what is a pitocin? ill def have another epidural coz i couldnt handle they pain one bit. altho i was induced and the labour was coming on hard and strong i couldnt bare it, so i had epi at 4cm

Pitocin is the drug that helps bring along contractions and helps you dialate. They make the contractions closer together too.

With my first I was induced. I was 41 weeks 6 days and not dilated or effaced at all. The amount of time from when Pitocin was started until I had an emergency c-section was over 12 hours and I never got past 1/2 cm dilated. I later found out I have scarring of the cervix from a D&C and can't dilate, so I wasn't dealing with a normal labor situation. Anyway, several hours before the c-section I got my epidural and it was heaven!!!! Probably made sweeter because of how horribly the induction/labor progress was going.

I had a great induction/epidural experience as well. Like the origional poster I was not able to dialatewelluntil I relaxed. After the epi things went fast with my total labour being 5.5 hours!
