k one thing people forget and I always suggest is flip flips, like rubber ones, for showering. You do not want to take a shower n the hospital in your bare feet, YUCK

WARM SOCKS! A few changes of clothes for you and husband. An outfit for baby. Your own toiletries, the hospital's are cheap. Breast pads for leaks. Everybody says your own pillow, but I'm not bringing mine. Cameras, insurance and ID cards. The car seat. A portable DVD player / Wireless laptop if the room does not provide. Extra bag for bringing gifts home. The hospital should provide everything else including diapers, formula samples, pads, recieving blanket.

I was logging on to ask this same thing so thanks!! A few people have told me to take your own nightgowns and robe. Aside from that I haven't really gotten any advice except what is here.

I would suggest NOT taking your own nightgown. Lol I couldn't believe the stuff that leaked out of me before, during, and after giving birth. I know, I know, TMI, but it's the truth. lol. Between nursing and leaky b___sts, and wearing sanitary pads again for the first time in probably 10+ years, I felt a mess. I would have ruined my nice nightgown. For me it was much easier to just hand it all over to the hospital cleaning staff. Good luck! ~ spam

I disagree, buy 2 inexensive nursing gowns and bring them. ANYTHING is better that wearing hospita gowns, especially when you just want to feel semi normal. The first time I did not bring anything to make me feel good about me and trust me when people came to visit I wished I had. This time brought good shampoo and conditioner, really nice smelling shower gel and lotion, make-up, etc.

For you:
-Socks (you don't mind tossing)
-CHAP STICK (trust me)
-Pull back for your hair if you need it
-I just used the hospital gown...one less thing you have to bring! ;) But then again to each his own and some hospitals don't offer them!
-Pillow/Boppy (and one for your hubby if need be- TRUST me)
-Movies/Music
-Control top panties
-Shampoo/body wash
-Camera
-Make-up if you want ( I thought I would care- NOPE! ;))
For the baby:
-I brought one outfit, otherwise she stayed in a hosptial tee and blanket...again easier on me
-Socks for the baby
-Just in case bring mittens
-Hospital gave us a cap, but if yours does not or you have one you just really like- bring it ;)
-Car seat
-Blanket
-Hospital gave us lots of goodies, but again if your hospital does not...diapers, wipes, bottle with formula (just in case even if you plan on b___st feeding)
-You packed diaper bag...you might get hung up going home.

for baby- mittens so baby doesn't scratch there face, socks, coming home outfit, hat, recieveing blanket(3) much nicer for those first photos then the standard hospital one, your packed diaper bag for the ride home, if formula feeding bottles of your choice with nipples, car seat, boppy pillow.
for mom- socks, some maternity underwear...nicer then the stretch mesh they give you nothing to expensive as you are going to soil it, nursing bras or regular bra, t shirts for under the gown, that way you can sit up in bed for photos with a nice shirt and cover the rest of you with a blanket, flip flops incase you need to do some walking to jump start labor, camera, video camera, zip lock bag to keep little things they give you...we got the alarm thing they clamped on the baby, loose pants for going home...remember you will have a 4 inch thick pad on and some baby weight, makeup, hair brush, razor, chap stick, book to read, some snacks...likes cheezits and gatorade.
for dada- x tra change of clothes, some snacks, money for vending machine and parking, pillow, blanket, change for payphone or cell phone to call family and friends.

here's what I have:
for baby:
4 onesy outfits, 1 come home outfit, handful of size 1 diapers, wipes, baby powder, baby lotion, baby washcloths, baby shampoo, baby towels, baby blankets, portable changing station, sling carrier. (lots of outfits-it's normal for babies to need a changing every 30 minutes or so, best come prepared, right?)
For me:
shower stuff, underwear I WOULDN'T MIND THROWING AWAY afterwards, pantie liners, and 1 outfit to leave the hospital in. I expect I'll be in a gown for the most part while I'm there. Might bring some extra jammies just in case-best to bring something comfy.
Believe it or not-all this fit in a medium sized diaper bag.
When packing, I'd suggest an old trick I used in the military. Roll up your clothes as small as you can, and put them tightly packed into a ziplock. Close the bag almost all the way, and push all the air out. This will air-pack your bags and give you enough space so that you won't make your significant other carry 3 bags while helping you out to the car.
The shower shoes are a nice touch too. Military requires their troops to use them-even after cleaning the shower daily.
