Scared Of Induction Next Week

I posted this on the third trimester board but I read a few articles about how inducing labor with the gel and/or stripping the membranes can be dangerous to women infected with Group B strep. I am desparate to go into labor on my own so I can avoid this. They want to induce me at 41 weeks, next Wednesday if nothing happens before then. Now that I have read articles on this subject I am more worried than ever. It says by inducing with the gel or stripping the membranes it can cause the GBS to be introduced to the baby while still in utero. I am scared! I am also allergic to penicillin so while in labor I have to have a different type of antibiotic due to GBS. What would you do?

I would wait. If all else is healthy and going to plan dont let them rush you by inducing! Take your time, upto 42wks is ok. Good Luck xo

I was GBS+ too. I thought the only time it was an issue was if they didn't get the antibiotics into you 4 hours before you gave birth. My doctor stripped my membranes twice -- I was 8 days past my due date. Second time I went into labor so I didn't have to be induced, but I did have an appointment for an induction. Oh, and I'm allergic to penicillin too, and actually have terrible reactions to the sulphur drugs they often give, so I was really concerned about that part. The antibiotics were fine -- though I hate having an IV, it was nice to have the extra saline to keep me hydrated. I would definitely share your concerns with your doctor. Sometimes just having your induction appt seems to make people go into labor, lol. I'm the proud mom of an little boy born 9/15/06. He had no problems whatsoever, so try not to stress over the GBS+ too much. If you have any other ques. I'll try to help! Good luck.

Mandee, I hope I saw this post in time. I was induced 5 weeks ago and was also postive for GBS. I had the gel and my membranes stripped. My waters broke and 3 hours later my dd was born. My labour was extremely quick for a first time mum and an induction. As I was GBS + they didn't check me until I said that I had to push, then they checked me and found that I was actually crowning. Of course this meant that I didn't get all my antibiotics as the labour was unexpected quick. I got one dose right before dd was born and didn't get the other one at all. It wasn't a problem. It just meant that they kept a closer eye on dd after she was born. We were both fine. All I can say is don't be afraid, you're in the right place and they deal with this situation all the time. However if you do end up with an quick labour and they won't check you if your waters break, tell them as soon as you think you need to push. Even one dose of antibiotics can help and its quick through an IV. Mine were added as a bolus rather than by a drip as there wasn't time. Just talk to your midwife so she can help you. Good luck. You'll soon be holding your baby, if you aren't already. :)
