With my first child my edd was 1/30. He was born 2/24. I think I was supposed to be induced because the day ds was born the dr. says to me, "Didn't anyone tell you to come to the hospital last week? Oh well, I guess everything worked out." No one told me anything, LOL! I just found out Saturday that I am pg again!

Hi Daisy Jean, I had decided to see how things went with my first baby. I had never given birth before so I felt I couldn't lock myself into a decision on pain relief. I don't know how anyone here can really say you should do it this way or that way because labor pain is so different with everyone. I have had many painful experiences including having all the bones in my face broken or cut and put back together and I will still say hands down that my pain during labor was the worst I have ever experienced. Then my cousin gave birth at home in the water after 18 hours of labor and said it wasn't that bad. My contraction started a 3 min apart and weren't that bad at first and I thought hey this is easy, but after an hour or so they got bad. I suffered in absolute agony for about 10 hours until I was 7 cm dialated. At that point I was so exhausted from the pain and vomiting that I asked how much longer it might be and was told about 1 hr more per cm. I decided I just couldn't do it anymore and asked for an epidural. Once I had the epidural we discovered that my body had been so tense from the pain that I had been slowing down the labor. I went from 7 to 10 cm in 30 min. Pushed for about 20 min and delivered my daughter with laughter and joy. I asked my doc for a "light epidural" and I was still able to feel the amazing sensation of her little body sliding out of me and walk around immediately afterward. Now I'm 39 wks with my second baby and I pretty much have decided to go in with the same att_tude. If I can't stand the pain anymore I will feel very comfortable having an epidural. I consider my first birth to have been an amazing experience so don't feel that you're doing anything "wrong" if you decide at some point to have an epidural. Anyone who says you should do one thing or another isn't living in your body and can't know what labor will feel like to you. Also, anyone telling you they had "natural" birth but they had demerol or other narcotics is being silly. I did stay totally away from narcotics while in labor because they drug the baby as well as you. I hope this helps you and good luck!

I guess that last post aimed at me. I have had five labors. I had a shot of stadol with the first, a shot of demerol with the second, nothing with the third and fourth, and a shot of nubain with the fifth. I was induced with the fifth - she weighed over 10lbs.

Michelle...compare your others with the two you had natural, with no meds at all. Just curious, thanks! =0)

i was 17 when i gave birth to my now 9 months old and i didnt have time to get any meds at all. my labor was 3 hrs 1 min- so it was short and sweet. pushing did not hurt-its the contractions that hurt most but i still dont think the pain was too much to handle at all. i thought it was gonna hurt sooo much more!

This could take awhile. First labor: Stayed home until I realized I had to push - not poop. Got to the hospital and was fully dilated. Panicked. Had nurse by neck. Received shot of stadol. Delivered 30 to 45 mins later. Wt: 7/12. Second labor: Baby was occiput posterior. Water broke before labor fully underway. Back labor. Very painful. Staff insisted shot of demerol would help me relax. Lied. Demerol sucks. All it did was make me sleepy and feel out of control. I do not recommend Demerol. Wt: 8/8. Third labor: Was at hospital about 2 hours total. No drugs. Staff irritated me. Wt: 9/10. Fourth labor: Was at hospital about an hour and a half. No drugs. Wt: 8/12.5. Fifth labor: Induced. Was at hospital way too long. Hungry and tired. Asked for pain relief. Received shot of Nubain. Sucked. I was stoned off my a__s. Couldn't get it together enough to push. Awful. Wt: 10/3. Prefer no drugs. I felt really good, almost euphoric, after my unmedicated births. I really want to have this next baby at home.

Michelle, you go girl!!! Everyone who has had a natural childbirth has told me that they felt awesome afterwards and that they wouldn't want to do it any other way. I want to feel that way. I believe God set things up for a woman to feel that power after going through all of that pain. I don't want meds unless I'm going to have a c-section and of course I wouldn't have a choice. I am so excited about labor. I have 10 days to go until my due date and I am packed for the hospital...I've never experienced so much excitement in my life!! :)

Michelle, I think you are a saint ( 6 children). I had one with epideual and one natural.(unplanned) Definitely prefer natural. This time I think I would be nervous making the natural decision beforehand. I'll just go with it. With my first I was at the hosptial 1hr45min, my second 23min. My doctor says that I am going have to check in a week early. My luck I'll be in labor 24 hrs. Good Luck to you.

Michelle, when you say "unmedicated" you mean nothing whatsoever right?? Just wondering, I'm having my first in June, and I totally wanna do it natural. I'm very excited and know I can do it. I think the pos. att_tude will help, but I HATE all the women who try to knock me down for wanting to! They act like I'm a complete fool, but all they know is labor with epidural. What is their problem and why do they seem to take it personally?

Kristina - May 2

Everybodys labor is different. Just because one person says breaking their elbow was more painful, doesn't mean it will be like that for another. Some women get back labor, some labor only lasts 15 min. I decided I am going to wait until I can't take it anymore, then get it. If I can get through it without, then great, if not there is nothing wrong with an epidural.

michelle - May 2

Nothing whatsoever, Maddie.
