Gel Induction Next Week What Should I Expect

I'm wondering if anyone would care to relate their experience with gel induction. I was induced with Pit with my last child from 1cm (baby #2) and had a great experience (no bad pain at all...got an epidural around 4cm and cruised through the rest), and now a different doctor is doing this induction for baby #3. I'm currently about 1cm and 60% effaced; "very soft" cervix according to my OB. What is "gel-h__l?" How do I tell the difference between that and real labor? I'm just worried that it will go too fast and I won't be able to get me epidural before I'm too far along....

Hi docmom I haven't had to be induced myself thank goodness but a friend of mine was induced with the gel a few years back. She said they had to apply it twice before it started to work, but once it did it was like period pain (very crampy) which is what normal labour generally feels like in the beginning anyway. She didn't progress much (though cramping got stronger) & after 3hrs they did an internal only to find the baby was breech & had to do a c-section anyway. From what I've been told of the gel it is a much gentler way to induce labour than the oxytocin drip & depending on how ready your body was anyway, labour progresses similar to if it had started on its own. Usually oxytocin induction is quicker (& can be more painful) than the gel so if you want an epi there should still be plenty of time to get one, but let them know before they start just in case.
