How Bad Is A Natural Birth

I'm pregnant with my second child. My first I had an epidural and I think it just slowed things down and caused more problems. I still felt contractions but couldn't really feel to push the baby. I pushed for three in a half hours after I was fully dilated. The doctor ended using forceps to get the baby out. This whole experience was not good. This time around I would like to try a drug free birth. My question is how bad is it going natural?

ALL LABOR IS BAD!hehe BUT, I THINK ALOT OF IT IS IN YOUR MIND, YOU ARE CAPABLE OF PUTTING ALOT OF IT TO THE SIDE, ALTHOUGH, I HAVE HAD AN EPIDURAL. IF YOUR LABORING ON YOUR ON, YOUR MORE APT TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE NATURAL, NOW WHEN I HAVE BEEN INDUCED THAT'S BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY FOR ME! WHEW..IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE SO MUCH HARDER AND FASTER. I'VE HAD 4 BABIES, 2 EACH WAY, 2ND & 3RD WERE NATURAL, I MADE IT FINE. 1ST AND 4TH HAD TO BE INDUCED AND SO MUCH LOVED MY EPIDURAL. I AM DUE IN 4-5 WEEKS AGAIN AND PLAN ON STICKING IT OUT AS LONG AS I CAN. IT SEEMED LIKE IT SLOWED ME DOWN TO, BUT I HAVE PIH AND WILL PROBABLY BE INDUCED IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, SO YOU KNOW WHAT I'LL BE GETTING, PLUS I DON'T WANT TO FREAK MY KIDS OUT BECAUSE THEY WILL BE THERE TOO AND I'M AFRAID THEY'LL BE UPSET & CRY. GOOD LUCK KEEP US POSTED WITH YOUR PROGRESS!!

I wouldn't describe labor as "bad" because you can cause yourself to stress and worry about what the pain is going to be like and you will make it worse. I know from experience. I have given birth to a 10lb 22in boy and an 8lb 19 in boy both naturally and yes it was painful, but I wouldn't have it any other way. If you psyche yourself up mentally before going into labor that may help. I do know that screaming and yelling does make it worse because you're using all of that energy which should be going towards pushing the baby out. So try to think positive and conserve your energy for the actual pushing and that may help. No,it is not going to take away the pain by any means but it does help. Good Luck.

Hey there andrade, my sister decided before labor even started that she didn't want an epidural. She wanted it natural and didn't want the risks that came along with epidurals.. Now i'm telling you that she has had 3 boys, all natural nothing for pain, no nothing. One was 9#4oz, and the others were 8#13oz and 6#11oz... I mean each time her labor was cut in half, 6hour, than 3 hours and than 1.5 hours. yeah it hurt (i'm guessing)but the only time she even yelled was at the doctor that the baby was coming.lol.. so good luck in what you decide and hey just remember if it gets to unbearable than you can always get the epi, but try natural. my mom had epi the first baby, and had her 2nd natural.. n she preferred natural

My advice is to be committed to going drug-free and to get a doula. My first baby, the hospital didn't offer epidurals, so no choice there. The second, I begged, but my doula helped me try other things. Good thing, too...the doula asked the nurse to recheck me before they gave me the epidural and she found that I was 10cm and ready to push. that would have been a really sucky time to get the epidural : )

what is a doula?

CamysMama - May 19

Holly, a doula is someone who is trained to coach you through the birthing process. A doula is not a medical professional, but can support the expectant mother emotionally and physically through labor. I have been giving serious thought to having a doula there during my labor (in September) but my fiance is against having anyone there except the two of us and the doctors, and I want to honor his wishes and have it be a special moment shared only by the three of us (baby makes three!) Also we are really poor, and I don't think we can afford a doula even if we wanted one! (Most medical insurance won't pay for a doula.) Hope this helps!

My partner took the decition to induce herself by useing homeopathic medicine, She used caulophyllum 200 she took this for 3 days and on the third day she was in labour the contractions were not regular so she took pulsatilla 1m and that made things speed up she did not dialte very muchso she had 1 caulophyllum and cammomille 30 for the pain She did not have any pain relieve no gas and air and said the pain was a lot less than when she used gas and air for our first baby. She all so drank raspberry tea from day one and made sure to exercise. Our daughter was born at home and the midwife was here 2 minutes before she was born by which time I was supporting our babys head. It was a very easy and almost pain free birth. we both plan a nother baby soon.

Wow, I think it sounds a little risky to induce your own labor... whew I know I'm going to wait until Camy's ready to arrive, unles the docs strap me to the gurney and force me! I'd rather have her come a little late than too early. I'm determined to have a 100% natural delivery, but that's how I feel now, never having been through labor before. Who knows, once I go into transition, I might be screaming for some pain relief. I hope I'm able to stay strong and use breathing and relaxation like my mom did, and give birth to my daughter the old-fashioned way.

well i have had a natural birth to a 10lb baby it was very long and painful but it was definitly worth it id rather have gone through that then have an epidural with all the risks ...you can definitly do it our bodys are made to give birth and be able to handle it without any sort of drugs..my labour was in total 23hrs but hard labour for about 10 it only took 45 minutes to push my baby out becuz i was pushing like a maniac lol wanted that baby outttttt.obviously our bodys r made to give birth becuz i weighed 120lbs and was able to give birth to a 10lb baby with only 5 st_tchs*im sure the kegels helped in the st_tchs department*lol..good luck:)

It was bad, but not that bad. I can tell you that I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! It was the best experience of my life. I look back on it and realize that it all went to fast. I only had to be at the hospital for 4 hours. I actually had a epidural, but by the time they got it in I was pushing and he was out with in 8 minutes. I went from 6cm to having him out in 45 mins. I wish I hadn't even bothered w/the epidural b/c I couldn't feel my legs after the fact. I did however feel it all during. I started out at 122lbs and at the end I was 149lbs. He weighed 6 lbs 1oz, was 4 weeks early and was very healthy. I only had to have 2 st_tches, felt that too. Somthing funny, when he got ready to give me my st_tches I said is this going to hurt----DUH!!! I had just given birth to my baby boy, how on earth could 2 st_tches hurt...hahaha...If it makes you feel any better, I would have rather pushed him out then have the st_tches. He is also my first! It was great, I loved it and can't wait until he's about 1 1/2 - 2 years old so I can do it all over again!! Good Luck to you. Don't let your mind trick you... It gets painful, but you pain will eventually reach it's peak, I'm so mad at myself, I could have done it, even though I did actually end up feeling everything, if I had waited I wouldn't have had to deal with it after the fact, but anyway good luck, I know you can do it!!!

I am 21 yrs old almost 22 ...i am on my 3 child, due this month.... my first child i was enduced and i had a epidoral.... i will not get another one....i highly recommend not getting a epidoral expecially if it is your first baby.. you can not feel the contractions and it makes it hard to push expecially when you dont know how or when to push..i had a terrible experience with not having my child naturally..some people like them and i absolutly hate them... when i had an epidoral n couldnt get my son to c_m out by pushing....so they use forsepts ( the big tong looking things) and a vac_me and when they used the vac_me to suck him out blood flew every where which made me panic plus everyone in the delievery room who was there for suport ...it scared us out of our minds , thinking they sucked his head off....i had my 2 child naturally and honestly yes it hurts alot but once its over and the beautiful baby is in your arms you will forget all about the pain you experienced and it was well worth the pain in the end... any women can do it i promise i have faith in women in going naturally...i think it makes us stronger ... i kno i am young but i feel strongly as a mother of soon to be 3 children and raising a total of 5 soon to b 6! good luck ....its not tha bad you will servive.........

Olivene - June 11

Tony's Wife, I am choosing not to have an epidural because I have read that sometimes they stall the labor, it can make it more difficult to push, blood pressure can drop, more likely to shake uncontrolably, and the (unlikely) possibility of permanent injury, especially where I live because they don't usually do them. After all of that, many people are very happy with their epidural experiences.

CaliTrish - June 12

I can't speak for myself as this October will be my first; however, my sister has had four children. The first three she had an epidural, but the fourth one she ran out of time as the hospital had sent her home. She said the experience was worse than gall stones and having her gall bladder removed. It was her quickest labor and she healed much faster, but she said if she had had her first that way she likely wouldn't have had any more children after that. So, she *highly* recommends an epidural. On the flip side, I had a friend who had a natural birth using the Bradley Method and breezed through contractions and only had a little discomfort during the pushing. So, discounting complications, I believe it is mind over matter and preparation is the key. If you're prepared to have a natural birth and learn the proper breathing/distraction/relaxation techniques, it's probably quite doable. I'm not foolish enough to believe pain free but definitely doable. I plan to take the cla__ses and attempt a natural birth, but I'm definitely not afraid to rely on modern medicine if I'm not able to take the pain.

kimholl28 - June 14

I think it has a lot to do with mental preparation. With my first I wanted the epidural, I got it after labor was almost over and didn't push well. With my second I left it open as an option to have an epidural but prepared myself for the pain better. I didn't have the epidural and my labor was shorter and only pushed for about 30 min. I had pitocin with both so if this happens to you be prepared for the quick onset of the strong contractions, if not it will take you by suprise and it is hard to get through it once that happens.
