What part of it does the pain come from? The doc checked me for dialation last week with fingers, it didn't bother me at all (tho I was not dialated at all). But when they do a pap, that speculum thing always hurts. So is it the fingers that hurts you or the actual messing around with the cervix?

I can answer that one for you. It doesn't necessaringly hurt per say..its just a little uncomfortable. It feels like tenderness where you'd imagine your cervix to be. Kind of similiar to a menstrual cramp but lower in your v____a. The days following the simple & fast procedure you are still crampy. Oh, & during it, you might feel as if the Dr is being a little aggressive. This is because the cervix is hard to reach due to its further back position & the Dr has to get a finger in there to do the 'sweep.' Hope this helps.

im having a m/s on tuesday and i will be 40 wks and 6 days over due, ive been having pains for the past few days and nothing is happening! im desperate to have my little girl and ive tried everything apart from the herbal teas! i would advise that no 1 should do castor oil, ive done it 3 times, the first time i was sick, the second i couldnt get off the toilet and the third time it did nothing so im hoping the m/s will work.

When i knew i have having a sweep i search on google and saw this forum, nearly scaring myself to death! I think some people are just trying to scare us. Mine took 30 seconds and didnt hurt at all. It wasn't even uncomfortable! It hasnt worked yet, but I would definitely try it again!

I had a membrane sweep with my second child, this was just uncomfortable but the nurse was not sure if she had completely reached the area as I was so nervous and I guess she didnt want to make this worse for me. That night I went into labour and had my daughter the early hours of the next morning. I am now 41weeks overdue with my third baby and I am due in hospital on Thursday morning for a sweep, still feel nervous, although I experienced this with my second baby and it brought labour on but I think no matter how used we get to things, its always a personal and your own opinion at the end of the day, and what may be nerve wracking for one, may not be for another. But good luck to everyone with their future bundles of joy, its all worth it in the end when you hold her/him for the first time.

I had this done today, it was fine, was just like having a smear test. I think the elephant comments made by others are very irresponsible. Just relax.

Ok my opinion - I think that for some people it probably hurts really really bad, and for some it feels uncomfortable, and for some its not even uncomfortable. People are different, so dont think the ppl it hurt are lying, and dont call others liars or tell people to 'trust you' just because you didnt feel pain, it probably just feels different for everyone like labor does. Do you call someone who had a bad labor experience a liar because yours was 2 hours long and easy? no, and if you do youre a jerk. Im planning on having it done, I hope Im one of the lucky ones- for those of you who it hurt, and have had problems with the baby kicking you in ther cervix past 34 weeks, is that what it feels like? That sharp pain in the v____a that cripples you for a second or two? And for those of you who say how will you ever make it through labor if you cant do the sweep- one comes on usually over the course of at least a few hours, one if acute and immediate, not giving your body time to prepare for the pain. Theres a huge difference in the two, and people who think the sweeping hurts might tolerate labor very well bc they have time to get their bodies more accustomed to more and more severe pain. Good luck everyone.

Hi Guys! I had my first membrane sweep today (39 wks +2 days). My Dr didn't tell me what he was going to do. I thought we were just doing the old "check the cervix" game. Then he said, " This is going to be a little bit more uncomfortable than usual." I won't lie, it did hurt, but not anything like "being raped by an elephant." Afterwards, I cramped for about 2 hours, like a tolerable menstral cramp, and had a tad bit of bleeding, which is normal. The best advice I can give is try to relax, and use your lamaze breathing (In through the nose, out through the mouth, girls! :) It is truly not too bad. Besides, once your baby is in your arms, is it really going to matter?

Had my membrane sweep this morning at the hospital. Although I was nervous and tense, which they told me to breath through. I am 2-3cm dilated and hopefully this will start me off. Having a few contractions but still not sure if these are braxton hicks as I have loads of them during the past 2 months. If nothing happens I am booked in for induction Tuesday. But please go in for your appointment with an open mind, do not let negative comments from other people deter you from having one. After all its for the best interests of you and your baby. Good luck
