I had mine stripped twice and still had to be induced. It's not very comfortable to have it done, just some cramping, but I was told by a few friends of mine who had them stripped also, that it almost always helps things along. My doctor suggested it to hopefully put me into labor in the following days, but I guess in my circ_mstance, that baby came when she wanted to come anyway. Good luck.

Well I had my membranes stripped on April 26th and again on April 27th I went into labor on the morning of the 28th and had my son April 28th at 9:03pm 8lbs 13oz!! With my expierence I say it's worth a shot you never know if it will work for you unless you try!!!

I am 39 weeks and I had my appt today at 10:30. When my doctor did my exam, she caused me to spot and cramp like crazy. It is now 3:00 and I am still cramping. Is this normal. Did she strip my membranes? Could labor begin soon? I think I also lost my mucus plug shortly after also.

This is my first pregnancy, and I'm roughly 38 weeks along. Last week at my Drs apt (on Thursday) my Dr stripped my membranes (I was 50% effaced and 1-2 cm dilated) I felt just a little discomfort but no pain really to speak of. On saturday I lost my mucus plug, and since then I've just had really light cramping and heavy pressure. But no real contractions, I don't think. My Dr sounded like he was pretty sure I would have this baby before my next apt which is this Thursday, but I'm starting to seriously doubt that. But If I haven't he's going to strip my membranes again and set up a day to induce next week. Hopefully I'll have this baby soon though!

I am 40+2 and 3cm and 75% effaced. The doctor stripped me about six hours ago and I am so hopefull. After reading the posts I am discouraged. My husband spoke to a midwife at work who said that if it did not hurt it did not work. My doctor usually hurts me with each exam, however he said the baby's head was so far down that my cervix was easy to reach and the actual stripping did not hurt? Anyone have expierience with this?

I am 39w and my Dr stripped mine yesterday....it was uncomfortable, but if it works then it was totally worth it. The way I look at it is if you cant handle the membrane stripping how are you going to handle labor? That will hurt a lot more. I have been feeling really crampy and I did have bleeding for about 2 hrs after he did it. Good luck to all.

I have a question. I am 39 and 3 days and wondering about stripping of the membranes. Is it true that if they do that (stripping) will I have a "dry birth" more painful? Will it hurt my baby? Please help me! First baby and very scared.

sammi, i too have 4 kids (just had my 4th 3 weeks ago). i TOTALLY understand your pelvic bone area hurting. It definitely gets worse with each pregnancy!! I would suggest talking to your dr. about stripping your membranes. Communication with him/her is the BEST thing to do! Do you know how effaced or dilated you are at this point? That can give a clue as to know whether or not your body would respond to the "stripping." My dr. wouldn't do it if i wasn't dilated or effaced some. He told me every time when he did strip my membranes that "it may not work." If i remember correctly, it ONLY works if your body is ready to go into labor (it just kick starts it). You can also have your membranes stripped several times ... so if it doesn't work one week ... it may the next. Again, i suggest talking to your dr. about it. Or, maybe wait a week ... and then try it? This form of "induction" is not a sure fire way to get labor going. So, even if you do get it done, try not to get your hopes up and count on it working (though i know how hard it is to keep waiting and waiting!!). It may work, it may not. I had my membranes stripped with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies ... and it worked well with both (delivered within 36 hours of the procedure). I had it done this time as well ... but it didn't work (my water broke instead 3 days later!!). I hope and pray all goes well, feel free to ask more questions. Mandy :)

I AM 39 WKS PREGNANT AND THIS IS MY FIRST CHILD. WHAT IS STRIPPING OF THE MEMBRANES?

mandy - May 30

demetra, i know you can do a search online to find out more detailed what stripping the membranes is ... but this is what i came up with ... and i'm quoting a website ... it's "an aggressive pelvic exam in which [your dr.] will feel around just inside your cervix where the membranes ("bag of water") are attached to its rim. By running an examining finger around the inside of your cervix, he can separate the amniotic sac from where it's stuck there. Theoretically, this will allow the bridging molecules that stick the membranes to the inside rim of the cervix to break--all at a molecular level, mind you--and so be released and then converted into prostaglandins, which are powerful stimulants of labor." Basicly, he separates the bag of water from the cervix to release a labor inducing hormone. It will only work however if your body is ready to go into labor but just needs a little push. If it's not, it won't work. Hope that helps!

I am 39+4 wks., 2.5 cm. dlilated and 75% effaced. On Sat. I starting to lose my mucus plug, which caused heavy contractions throughout that day including every night as I tried to sleep. The contractions and crampiness have been so bad that I went to the hospital only to be sent home 3 hrs, later. I was extremely discouraged! Yesterday (Monday) at my doctor's appointment he stripped my membranes...ouch! Directly after doing so I noticed a bloody tinge in discharge. I had a terrible night of cramps and contractions that went away once I got up for the day. I am hoping that this procedure jump started labor because this is getting mentally and physically exhausting!

Hi, my due date is June 20, so I am 12 days away. My doctor stripped my membranes this morning during my pelvic exam as I am very ready to start labour. My hands and feet and very swollen and I have been feeling enormous pressure on my pelvis the past few days. I am hoping this membrane stripping will jump start labour.

tammy m - June 8

just a quick question. i am on my 1st baby and am 38 weeks today. last week i was told i was 2 cm. today i was told that i am only 1 cm. the doc said it was normal. anyway she stripped my membranes today and all i have had was cramping and irregular contractions. how do i determine when to go. i called the doctor and he said wait till they were 5 minutes apart. i knew that but between the cramps and contractions it feels like they are 2 minutes apart. (the doctor also during my appointment said the labor was right around the corner and my body is ready for labor) so does anyone know how long i really do have.
