Miscarriage With Closed Cervix

I started spotting June 11 and figured my period was a little early (LMP was 5/17/05) - I had just been at the doctor 6/7 and had a negative pregnancy test (for them to refill my bc). For some reason I took a hpt 6/23 and it was positive. I went to the doctor 6/24 to confirm the positive. I still had been spotting this whole time but didn't think much of it since I spotted with my two daughters for most of the first trimester. Saturday 7/2 I woke up and had passed a quarter size clot. I had no pain, just the clot. I decided to wait and see what happened before I went to the hospital. Around 5 pm I passed another quarter size clot so I went to the ER. They did an internal exam and the doctor said that my cervix is closed and that the blood appeared to be coming from the tip of my cervix - nothing seemed to be coming through it. My hcg level was 21,000. He said to go to my OB b/t 48 - 72 hours and have my levels re-tested. I have passed 2 more clots since being at the hospital - one yesterday morning and one this morning (both also quarter sized). My questions are...1) can you miscarry with a closed cervix? 2) can you miscarry and not have any pain associated with it? 3) Will they tell me my levels when I go to the doctor tomorrow or will I have to wait? 4) Should the ER doctor have done an ultrasound? This waiting is killing me...
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

hi, i just read your message!
i can answer your questions but dont take the answers to heart. you need to talk to your doctor or ob about it. Firstly it is possible to miscarry with a closed cervix - i did but i had to have a dnc because it was closed. however, the fact that it is closed and you have had no bleeding and have a high hcg level is a very good sign. 2nd i didn't have any pain until after i had the dnc but dont let this worry you until you know more from your doc. 3rd they can tell your hcg levels from 48 hours (this is the time it should take for the numbers to double) and 4th the er had their reasons for not doing a scan. if your levels have dropped, not doubled or gone up insist that they do a scan. it will put your mind at rest and show up any problems.
hope this helps. try to stay positive i know it is hard. best of luck with everything. let me know how you get on. take care x
