I work in a small dental office as an assistant. Its normal procedure to shield pregnant patients before X-rays and the X-ray technician informs us that the radiation is near zero beyond a 6-foot radius of the machine.
My partner and I are planning for pregnancy and are concerned. Should I consider changing careers first or am I overly concerned?

I work in a similar position in a medical office....they are only here once a week and its a hopital clinic...I asked that question...and they said everything is fine as long as I am not in the room at the time of the x ray...its actually in the back of this building so I rarely go back there at all when they are here...I dont have any good answers...just thought I would let you know my situation...I am 5 months along and the baby is doing great...good luck

Thank you Christine! Here's an update, to anyone who's interested...My family doctor asked a fellow radiologist and his reply was there was nothing to worry about. The radiation is very localized and there is some shielding from the walls of the x-ray room.
I also asked another a__sistant from a different office. She states it should be safe as long as your in a different room when there is an x-ray. She's planning for pregnancy too!
I feel better now, except for one thing: there is no door between the x-ray room and where I work! Although the walls may absorb all or most of the radiation, will some pa__s through the open doorway?
If any one knows, let me know. If I find out more, I'll be sure to let everyone know. Thanks!
