Hi, i am 18 years old, and at 19 weeks when i had my ultrasound, we found out that it was a boy..well, the next day my doctor called me, and told that they found a cyst on the brain..choroid plexus cyst..this is my first baby, and i was reading about this stuff and it said that it was a marker for down syndrome..my doctor said that when he checked my blood for any abnormalities, that everything came back fine....does that mean, that the father could have abnormalities in his blood, that carry that gene..im so confused, they told me not to worry, but im scared to death...i know if this thing causes brain damage, or mental retardation, i just dont know...will someone please break this down on what choroid plexus cyst is so i can understand it?

I went through the same problem about 18 years ago when my son's CPC was found on an u/s. It was devastating news and, at that time, less was known about the possible outcomes...except that they were all awful. My son is healthy in every way and I really believe that the medical community needs to be more circ_mspect in its management of issues like this one. I've done quite a bit of research into this matter and, while I would never hold myself up as any kind of expert, the larger literature holds that the odds of CPCs being anything but either benign anomolies or natural variations in brain development, is small. Until the medical community takes a longer view of these "anomolies", women will continue to worry, usually needlessly, about something that turns out to be quite normal.

my Answer that to be sure about ur case "amy" go and make an aminoacid test in the lab for the bay to be sure about the numbers of chromosomes and you will be sure about ur baby case if he or she had a trosomy case or not "HOPE NOT"..

I also was told my baby could have trisomy 18 based on the u/s. They paired that info with my bloodwork & gave me the % which was not bad. We would not do the amnio b/c of the risks & she turned out perfect. Has anyone had their md review their risk including the bloodwork? They scare the c___p out of you and most of the time the cysts are a normal part of development and disappear. The majority of true trisomy babies do not make it through the 1st trimester so chances are slim that your babies will have it. It ruined my pregnancy, please don't let it ruin yours. I wish you all luck.

After my wife's 20 week ultrasound they found a choroid plexus cyst on our baby girl. Of course I immediately searched the internet and was then absolutely terrified to the point of not sleeping or being able to concetrate. Unfortunately, a lot of the forums I looked at had people in the same situation, but not a lot of rea__surance from those that "had been" in the same situation and had come back to say "everything turned out ok". After my wife's level two ultrasound (at 23 weeks), the cyst had dissappeared and no other markers were found. The doctor indicated that "with" the cyst present, our baby would have had a 1 in 5000 chance of of having an abnormality. We were given a clean bill of health, so I wanted to post a rea__suring message for all those that are in the same situation.

I hope this is the right sub-forum to get a good consensus.
My daughter-in-law is 31, and in the 21st week of her first pregnancy. On her Level 2 ultrasound last week, the doctor told her her baby is looking real good. All measurements and benchmarks in normal range. Stellar. And it's a boy!
Then, the next day, they tell her that they DID notice one choroid plexus cyst (CPC). This is one of the markers of Trisomy 18, a genetic disorder causing Edwards Syndrome, a devastating, almost always fatal disease.
Now, they said that while 1 in 3000 babies are born or miscarry with Edwards, that the odds are 1 in 350 if there is an isolated CPC present. Working the odds, if there is NOTHING else wrong with the fetus, those odds have to be dramatically more rare.
But my questions are:
1. Are there any mothers/parents out there who similarly got this scare and all turned out well; and
2. Can an ultrasound see BOTH sides of a fetus? From what I see it can only see one side, and therefore there could be significantly more cases of CPCs on the unSEEN sides of the fetus. IF that is the case, then how many MORE normal healthy babies have been born with having had CPCs that were never detected. This raises the odds of an isolated CPC being no big deal at all in virtually ALL cases.
Or am I totally wrong on this?

This is very important regarding choroid plexus cyst diagnosis at 20-24 week ultra-sound.
While the risk of trisomy 18 -- a tragic disorder -- is there, I need to add my voice to the chorus of those who were told by their dr. that there was a CPC on their fetus' brain AND whose wonderful little boy came out TOTALLY NORMAL. My son and dil suffered needless worry over a diagnosis that was microscopically rare.
While the Dr. did say that "absent other tell-tale symptoms" the risk was very low, I am posting here to set parents' minds at ease that if there are NO other factors that the Doctor point out leading you to be concerned about Trisomy-18, Downs or any other disorder, STOP WORRYING!! The medical community simply has to cover itself in the event that there IS a problem.
Repeat: Absent other symptoms that the Dr. is SPECIFIC about, he/she is simply telling you about a VERY common occurrence (CPCs)that modern technology is simply able to see today, and that have been present in NORMAL BABIES for thousands of years, but just not seen by older technology.
Enjoy your pregnancy, and "pay it back" by posting HERE if you have had the same experience.

This happened to me 11 years ago. I didn't have amnio as no other signs on ultrasound - of course my son was fine (still is!)but the worry was awful and I know how you feel. I was 36. Due to some research at the hospital where I had my scans the doctors stopped telling pregnant women about isolated cysts (i.e. cysts where nothing else seen that is of concern). This was because they felt it was not worth the worry. They now consider isolated cysts as part of the normal variation. So if this is you - please don't worry.

My baby had mulptiple cysts at the 18 week ultrasound. The worry totally ruined my pregnancy, my doctor even said the baby had more chance of having down syndrome which is totally untrue from what I've read! My baby was absolutely fine, and he's always been very alert for his age, smiling very early etc. The cysts went away later in the pregnany. They also found other things that turned out to be of no consequence except to stress me out - a dialated renal pelvis (something to do with the kidney) and a dialated ventricle in the brain. They all went away and were just part of development.
