IUD Malfuction

I'm glad I found this thread. I've had my IUD four months. I chose this method because I had one before, for 12 years, and it seemed fail safe. My periods were regular and I didn't think about it until it started to hurt, and then I had it removed. The search for a new birth control was problematic. Ring, pills, too many emotional side effects. Barrier methods thoroughly unappealing. I accidentally became pregnant shortly after I turned 40. I'd always wanted a family, but never found a mate suitable for fatherhood and absolutely never wanted to be a single mom. My boyfriend and I were devastated, and after lengthy discussions and some professional counseling, opted to terminate the pregnancy by aspiration (an early pregnancy abortion method largely unavailable in the US). We were relieved at first, and I constantly insist that we made the right decision: we're too old (he's 50), I have no health insurance, we're both freelancers with unreliable incomes, and we live in Brooklyn (though not under the same roof), where neither of us can imagine raising children (though plenty of people do. In fact, my neighborhood is well-stocked with middle-aged parents of very young children). But I can't get over it. I am tormented most of the time. I still think it would be very, very difficult for me to have a child, but keep wondering, now what? What do I do for the rest of my life? So, here I am, nearly a week late (I was very, very regular). No physical symptoms, but a great deal of agitation like I felt when I was pregnant. This week I really spiraled emotionally. Feels like PMS? The awful feelings subsided yesterday, not with the arrival of my period, but with an afternoon spent babysitting for a 13-month old whose parents I have the pleasure to know. I'm afraid to take a test. What if it's positive? The threads are still in place. What if it's negative? I talked to my Mom about it, she said, oh for goodness sake, you have an IUD-- you have plenty of things to worry about in your life but pregnancy isn't one of them. And now I stumble across this board. How many of the nearly 700 people who posted here turned out to have conceived with IUDs in place? What is the actual failure rate?

4strings1bow, I had posted here back in January. I had a miscarriage with an IUD in October and was told everything worked properly. I was so relieved I miscarried. I will be 39 in a couple weeks. When I was 19, I got pregnant with twins and married. Of course I got divorced in short order and raised the twins on my own until I remarried 10 years ago. My hubby and I planned to have 1 more and he is wonderful - 7 years old now. I did not want any more children and neither did he, so, when I found out I was pregnant just 3 months after the miscarriage and my IUD was still in place. I was devastated. I went to a new ob/gyn, he removed the IUD and told me I would probably miscarry - I did not. My husband and I took the trip to "THE CLINIC" but I couldn't bring myself to go through with it. As upset as I was, we continued with the pregnancy. NOw, I couldn't imagine life without her. She is two months old and wonderful. I don't believe God guides are life - but I do believe he had this happen for a reason. maybe this is ur 2nd chance... good luck to u...

TrishD, My period started immediately after I posted above. I cried just as hard as I did when the stick showed positive last April. It's all very difficult now. While I was glad that I had access to the very gentle aspiration procedure at that time, I think I would not have gone through with it if I hadn't--and I would have been a pumpkin for Halloween. Or not. At my age, anything can happen. So, it seems everyone I know has babies now, and I wish I had one too. But maybe when I'm 53 I'll be relieved not to be dealing with a teenager. My boyfriend's parents were older parents, and they both died when he was in his early 30s. He misses them terribly, but he's close with his three older siblings--one of whom is more than 20 years older--and that makes all the difference. It just seems unfair to have one child late in life knowing the likelihood is pretty high that you won't see them turn 50, or even 40. But I would keep it if I got a second chance. Definitely.

OK, so I really need to know if any of you have actually been pregnant on the mirena after getting several negative at home test results? I have many symptoms of being pregnant and I am really worried that I might be pregnant.

Tarababy - November 26

Wow, sounds like a lot of pregnancies with IUD's! I have mirena as well. I had a positive pregnancy test two days ago and a negative one yesturday, and a very, very light possibility of a positive tonight. I will try again tomorrow. I called my NP and she was booked, her RN told me to go to the same day clinic, went there and the MD told me he wasn't comfortable taking it out and referred me to gynaecology. I was supposed to be called today, but heard nothing. Has anyone had a false positive with/without mirena?

Hi everyone. I've had a Mirena IUD since April 2007 and have been able to feel the strings until about a week ago. I've not had a period since getting Mirena. For the past few days my stomach has felt weird; bloated, gas, nausea, cramp like pains, and blood tinged mucous. Also for a couple of days my b___bs were tender. I've taken 3 pregnancy tests in the last 7 days and all were negative. I'm going to call my ob/gyn on Monday. Could I be pregnant? My back hurts too. I would only be 3-4 weeks pregnant. Thanks. Jennifer

Hey i've just been reading past comments and i'm really suprised on how many girlies have gotten pregnant with the IUD. I too have one fitted and the strings have gone up inside and wrapped round the IUD itself. I need to be put to sleep for it removed. It was due to be removed 6 years ago but due to my circ_mstances i never did have it removed. Ive had regular monthly periods since havin it fitted 7 years ago up until this year. My last period was christmas eve and feel pregnant. I have two sons my oldest is almost 14 n my youngest is 12. I had it fitted so that i could choose to have more children or not. I desided not too as my kids are both in high school and i dont want to start again. Ive got no choice to now, i no i'm pregnant as i have the same pain as the last two. my nipples are turning brown and ive lost weight too. I did a pregnancy test but it was negative, i had 5 negatives with my oldest and was almost 8 weeks before it showed positive. I guess i'm one of the 2% then. Here is to the next 8 months...i'm scared, really scared as i need to be put to sleep for it removed, i dont want to miscarry as i no my head couldn't deal with it....sorry waffling. thanks or reading

Hi, I am happy to have come across this site. I was reading all the way from the beginning, then skipped lots in between..just too much women all with the same issues. I have had my Nova-T copper IUD(canadian kind, but only good for 3-5 years) in for 1 1/2 years now. I have had abnormal periods in the past, but since I had this IUD inserted, I have had a very heavy 7 day period at least every 4 if not 6 weeks when it was late.....but always very very heavy from the IUD. Now concerns have risen, since my last period was in the end of December. I have been waiting patiently, just thinking it will be a little late, but will come shortly. So, in the beginning of this month I had no cramps, but very light spotting for four days and also some dark brown blood at times...very little though. After that it just never came. so I was unsure if to consider that a period or not. Definately not the heavy period I am use to since the time I had the IUD inserted. I have two young boys, 2yrs and 5yrs, so I know spotting can happen when u are pregnant. I have been having sore b___sts and eating lots, so just too confused. ON the 18th of this month I went in for my 6 month pap(6 month follow up after having a leep procedure done in August/cutting off bad cervical cells) I told my doctor my conerns, so they just did a urine test and she said it is very odd chances of getting pregnant, almost none. She said to have missed or no periods are normal, but then I told her my IUD was not a Mirena with hormones as I knew she thought mine was. She said the strings I had on this IUD, look like a mirena IUD, so that is why she probably said that..knwoing the hormones in the Mirena may cause no periods. I told her( I am in states now by the way), that in Canada our copper IUD is not the same as the one here. She just said the urine test was negative and not to worry. I asked her if I could come in a month. She looked at my annoyed and said if I feel like I want to, but the strings are still there and there is no chances of pregnancy. I am paronoid, esp. in 2003, I had an ectopic pregnancy, but had no IUD at that time. I am so confused and sleepless at nights. I am worried and not sure if I should take her word, or start going out and buying my own pg tests and do every few weeks to make sure till a period returns. It is just too strange. I was thinking, maybe it was just too early and I will for sure book an appointment with her in a month to make sure, and ask her to do a pregnancy test. I cna tell she does not appreciate me telling ehr what to do, but I feel she just does nto take me seriously enough and see the chances are there even if I have an IUD. Has anyone else had a copper IUD, missed a period like me and showed up negative on the urine test? do you think it may just be too ealry? I will pray, and either way me and my husband will have to deal with it.

Hey Ladies I think the most common thing that is happening is we all have an IUD or Mirena and since this has occured we all experience possible symptoms of being preggos or become preggos. And because of this, majority of us become concerned and frustrated as were told the possiblity of pregnancy is at a minimum however because of these syptyoms this does worry all of us and we pretty much freak out as our periods are out of wack. Is contraception meant to cause this much stress on a women and is it healthy. I'm useless at the pill and don't like the jab and a histerectomy is out of the question as i do want more kids after my kids are at a more controlable age lol... I'm just tired of the concerning look i always have when its time to come and it doesn't show..(periods) its good i ain't preggos but if i did i'd want to know the baby will be safe and i'd want it to be on my terms..

TaraS - February 26

Yea, I know the feeling Huts. I think the hormones in the Mirena do that, but the IUD I have is just copper and no hormones, so maybe there is a greater risk of pregnancy....I ma confused. It sucks that we have this thing in our bodies that causes us to worry so much, even though that was the exact reaosn why we put it in....to not worry. Guess nothing is 100% and this is the con of this device. So far, other than the heavy and painful periods, I had no issues till now. I am certian somehting is not right. I will be back to post the outcome and be back to check any responses. Thank you and good luck to everyone who patiently waits. This is definatley not fun. :-)

TaraS - March 8

I am back to let those looking, know my outcome. Last week I went and bought a hp test at the store, because I was waiting since the end of December for my period to return. As my first post stated, I did spot a month ago and it had been over 2 months since I had gotten my period. Well, today I feel my cramps and know my period is here...finally!! So it may just be another problem why my period took so long, or maybe there was a small chance that I did somehow conceive, but the IUD would not allow the pregnancy to continue...disturbing it and now leaading to my period. Guess I will never know, but am thankful I won't have to worry anymore about it. Good luck to all of you, who to are missing periods and have an IUD. :-)

I rencently lost 22lbs. I went from 148 to 126 in 8 weeks. I haven't got my period in almost 9wks. My LMP was Jan 12th. Started dieting first week on Jan. I went to the doctors bc I didnt get my period. During my visit he did a pelvic exam and blood work. During my pelvic exam he noticed my uterus was extremely tilted and couldn't see the oz (opening of my uterus)and couldn't eevn see my copper IUD. The nurse had to push on my belly to see it, when he did see it he said it was messed up and that the strings were tuced under...whatever that means and that my v____a was inflamed. He gave me anti-biotics for BV and a UTI everything else came back normal. I still haven't got my period. My uterus was never tilted like that ever!!! how would they have ever put in the IUD??? Shouldn't it have got removed if it wasnt visible?? He switched to a smaller scope and had to go in deeper in order for him to see it without the nurse applying pressure. I'm still in pain and still have discharged Hormones and pelvic exam normal. NEVER skipped before...EVER! only when I was preggers with my kids. Never even had a yeast infection! Why did it move like that and wheres my period?? I'm going back tomorrow but I'm worried. I have taken 2 PG test that came up negative. Anyone else had this happen???

Huts - March 19

Hey CaliSky, I have heard that when you loose weight the IUD can move around and some have even become preggers. I think your doctor should do further tests to determine the reasons or even removal of the IUD. There seems to be more and more issues and concerns with this contraceptive device. Seeing that you have never skipped a period and now after 9 months with nothing is a huge concern. I saw on the Teen Moms program and one GP advised one of the moms that IUD or MIRENA is a reliable and 100% effective source of contraception with NO SIDE AFFECTS. I was appaulled they should be telling them to do more reasearch. A tilted uterus sounds scary.. Please take care and i hope all goes well and maybe a second opinion?

CaliSky - March 19

It's only been 9 wks with no period actually. But like I said I am going to the doctor's office again today, so hopefully the doctor takes a better look. It is a different doctor. I also put in a request to see a gyno (military procedures are the worst!! need referals/orders for EVERYTHING!!!). Anyway the last doctor I had seen said that I prolly didnt get my period because I lost weight and that messes with you system and some ppl miss their period. IDK what to think but I am glad I get to go back. My BV is getting a little better, but still have symptoms. Thanks for responding. I will give an update later on today. Wish me the best. And btw I also feel PG symptoms like tender b___st waking up to pee...but waking up to pee could have been the UTI??? IDK didn't even know I had one until they tested me for it. I'm just traumatized from having my son 5yrs ago. Had really bad case of pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. I freak when something weird happens to my body. Anywho...sorry for going on and on! lol. Like I said I will give an update later.

Huts - March 20

Hey Sky At the mo i have missed my period again a whole month same symptoms as being preggers and it sucks, I'm 25 with 3 children and my youngest is turning 4 soon and right now another child is not in my mind right now i like babysitting nephews and neice's cause i can give them back to their mummy's. I just wish these stopped as the worry kind of concerns me every month i tend to miss. I hope all goes well and you'll be sweet. Cheers Huts
