Charmane I am glad to hear everything is going good you have made past a milestone really because alot of women don't get that far. I wish all the luck too you. Val- As you can see on this board all of the comments would be really scary to you, but they are true and happen to alot of women not only pregnancy but infections, cyst and other medical problems can be caused by the iud. I am not going to tell you to go get it nor am I going to tell you not. I just urge you to think and research the iud before you get it. Also weigh out the possibilty of you contracting a infection or a cyst is it really worth it? I hope all goes well for you and please let us know what happens. Godd luck

Hi, I have the copper Iud, I have a late period I'm six days late . I bought a hpt and it was negetaive. I I'm not experiencing pregnancy syptoms only low back pain when sitting or bending over to reach fro something. i would likt to know if anyone has advice for me should I get tested again in the coming days? Thank you

Holly - August 29

Scarlett you should go to the doctor asap. Even though the test is negative doesn't mean there is something going on. Alot of us has had negative results and end up with a positive with a blood test.

Scarlett---It may be too soon for a pregnancy test to say whether you're pregnant or not. Sometimes your hormone levels interfere with the reading & give you a false/positive reading when in fact, if you just wait a week or so, you will get the posive reading the next time you take it. That's what happened to me, at least, during my second pregnancy. If you can't get in to see your doc, wait a week & take the test again. Also, keep notes on what your body is feeling & the date & time so that when you do finally get in to see the OBGYN, you can have the symptoms ready at your fingertips. Good luck!

Update on me. I had an ultrasound this morning to see what was going on. All that I knew was that I had a 4000 hcg level on Friday and the bleeding on Thursday (and positive hpt). Based on that hcg level, I would be about 5 weeks along. The ultrasound displayed a perfectly in place IUD and no baby in the uterus. The u/s tech said possible ectopic pregnancy. They checked my hcg levels this afternoon and they were 6250. If it were a normal pregnancy, it should have doubled (the 4000) by now. I am to call my OB ASAP in the am to see what is next.

jdd... Sounds like my story. I am praying for you girl..

jdd- I am sorry to hear this. My appt had to be changed to wensday. I'm upsrt but at least I'm not in any immediate distress. I'm once again late on my period and I have no bleeding at this time. I am so confused. I talked to a nurse. she p__sed me off. She said she couldn't put me on the priority schedule because it was totally impossible to get pregnant with an IUD> She also said- nausea, fatigue, backa dn abdominal pain, missed period and moodiness weren't good enough reason to think I was preggers with an IUD. she said 'it has to be something else" oh I was fuming!

Hi I just wanted to post some info because I just saw the dr yesterday. Let me tell you a bit about me first. I have 2 kids 5 and 3. I just had an ectopic pregnancy August 13, 2005. I went in for my follow up yesterday. I asked my dr what I should do about birth control because all the pills I have tried have given my migraines. he asked me my symptoms of my migraines and told me that I shouldnt me on any type of hormonal birth control due to the fact that I have migraines with neurological symptoms. So my options are limited. He told me about the IUD but of course their is risk involved due to my history. I have had an ectopic pregnancy and I had pelvic inflammatory disease when I was 16. I am now almost 25. Well he gave me a pamphlet all about the mirena IUD but he said that if I was to get on that I would need the copper one because it has no hormones in it. Mirena is suppose to last 5 years and the copper one 10 years. Anyway I just wanted to put some info about mirena on here from the pamphlet. IF you have a history of or at risk for PID or ectopic pregnancy you should NOT use Mirena. Rarely, some women experience a cyst on their ovaries. It says only 1 in 1000 women who use Mirena will experience an unintended pregnancy during the first year of use. It's only recommended for women who have had at least 1 child and are in a monogamous relationship. Once removed your chances of getting pregnant are the same as if you used no contraceptive at all. You should see your healthcare provider 3 months AFTER mirena is placed to make sure it is in the right position after that it can be check once a year as part of your routine exam (which I guess could explain y some of you are pregnant only after a couple of months of having it inserted). After Mirena is inserted you may experience spotting or light bleeding requiring pads in ADDITION to your monthly period. This usually occurs for the first 3 -6 months after mirena is placed, during this time your period will be irregular, a few women may have heavy or prolonged bleeding during this time. After this brief adjustment period your number of bleeding days will decrease and your periods may stop. by 1 year of use there is a 90% reduction in menstrual bleeding and about 20% of users have no bleeding or spotting at all. There is also a warning that during the 1st 6 weeks of use, you should contact your healthcare provider to rule out pregnancy if you do not get your period or if you have other pregnancy symptoms. SIDE EFFECTS: menstrual changes, lower abdominal pain (cramps), acne or other skin problems, back pain, b___st tenderness, headache, mood changes, nausea. ovarian cysts have been diagnosed in about 12% of mirena users. In MOST cases these cysts disappeared spontaneously during the 1st 2 -3 months of observation. Women who have or have had b___st cancer should not use hormonal therapy. SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS uncommon but may include mirena going through (perforating) the uterus, which may require surgery and mirena may come out by itself which can lead to unwanted pregnancy. Who should NOT use mirena: if you think u may be pregnant, have ever had PID, have had a serious pelvic infection in the past 3 months following pregnancy, currently have an untreated pelvic infection, have more than 1 s_xual partner or a s_xual partner who has more than one s_xual partner, get infections easily including women is immune system problems, leukemia, aids or who abuse intravenous drugs, might have cancer of the uterus or cervix, have unexlpained bleeding from the uterus, have liver disease or a liver tumor, have or have ever had b___st cancer, have had or at risk of having an ectopic pregnacy, have a condition that changes the shape of the uterus such as large fibroid tumors, are allergic to levonorgestrel, silicone, or polyethylene. TYPICAL use rate of pregnancy with the Copper IUD is 0.8% with the lowest expected rate of pregnancy being 0.6%. For the Progesterone IUD the typical use of rate of pregnancy is 2% the lowest expected rate of pregnancy is 1.5%, the LNG 20 IUD has the typical use rate of pregnancy at 0.1% and the lowest expect rate of pregnancy being 0.1%. I just wanted to share that with all of you. I am not able to use anything hormonal especially the IUD. I hope this helps you all.

I got my mirena in March and have had a number of problems since getting it. My cycle lasts 2 weeks, I have had bacteria infections every month since getting the iud. I have an appointment to have it removed on Sept 15, but lately I have been having b___st soreness and lower abdomenal pain. Sure I see if they have an earlier appointment or have more test done when I have my appointment? I am sorry to hear about all the problems that the ladies are having I will keep everyone in my prayers.

Hello again everybody. Just wanted you all to know that I have taken 3 hpt and they all showed negative. The last one I took about a week after the first two, just to make sure. But, I'm still feeling certain symptoms; tender b___sts, slight cramping, weird stomach aches.... I have the paragard IUD (no hormones) so I'm not sure if these are "real" symptoms, or just the depo shot still acting up. I have had bleeding, but not anything like my periods were. I too have had clots come out when I go to the bathroom, some as big as quarters (it really freaked me out) and the bleeding is off and on and is bright red. I haven't had any major pains, just a little cramping every once and a while. I really appreciate this site because even though none of us like what's going on, I feel better that I'm not the only one who is going through this uncertainty. I know I should make an appointment with my gyn. but I really don't want to make that phone call. Plus, I've missed so many days of work because of this stupid IUD that I think my supervisor is getting less and less understanding of the whole thing. I'm not really sure if I'm asking a question or not, it just feels good to let it out.....

Holly-once I see the doc I'm going to bring up my conversation I had with the nurse. I've noticed that docs at my clinic hate it when a nurse dismises a patients concerns like that.

Holly - August 30

Well That nurse is full of **** I think she needs to come on this board and go back to nursing school. LoL

HI, I WAS JUST SITTING HER LOOKING FOR SOME ANSWERS. I AM 40 YEARS OLD AND HAD THE PARAGUARD IUD INSERTED 10 WEEKS AGO. I ALSO AM HAVING ALL THE PRE-PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS. I AM A DIVORCED MOTHER OF 4, 17, 15, 14 AND 6. I CAN'T IMAGE ANOTHER PREGNACY. I WISH I HAD DID MORE RESEARCH AND FOUND THIS WEBSITE BEFORE I GOT MY PARAGUARD INSERTED...GOD KNOWS I WOULD HAVE STAYED ON THE PILL. DUE TO SOME RESENT MINOR HEALTH ISSUES I DECIDED THAT IT WAS BEST THE I CHOOSE ANOTHER METHOD OF BIRTH CONTROL. I AM IN A NEW RELATIONSHIP ( ONLY 4 MONTHS) I CAN'T IMAGE HAVING TO TELL HIM THAT I AM PREGNANT. THIS IS TURNING INTO A NIGHTMARE. I WISH ALL YOU THE LADIES THAT ARE PREGNANT WITH THE IUD'S STILL INSIDE THE BEST OF LUCK ADN FOR THOSE WHO WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE IT FALL OUT OR REMOVED I WISH YOU THE BEST ALSO. I DON'T HAVE THE COURAGE TO TAKE A HPT YET...I A TRULY DEVATASTED...I DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT WHAT TO DO....HELP!!!!!

Dragonfly - August 31

Carolyn---I feel for your situation, but not knowing is only going to increase your stress until you find out. Take a HPT or , if you just can't deal with it now, make an appointment with your doc. One way or another, you need to find out. Best to do it early so you can make plans & deal with it in some way. Your partner is going to want to know, too. It's important! Remember, it doesn't just affect you. Good luck & let us all know how this turns out, okay? Bright blessings!
