Progesterone Level

My wife just got pregnent and we were told that her Progesterone was 10. I was doing some research and I found this article. Thought might help some of you. Progesterone (during pregnancy) 1st trimester: 9–47 ng/mL 2nd trimester: 17–147 ng/mL 3rd trimester: 55–200 ng/mL What Affects the Test: ---------------------------------- Certain hormone medications, including those containing estrogen or progesterone (such as birth control pills), can affect progesterone levels. Also, other medications, such as ampicillin and clomiphene, may affect progesterone test results. Progesterone levels are highest at bedtime and lowest in the early morning and after meals and exercise. Diagnostic imaging procedures (such as a thyroid scan or bone scan) that use a radioactive substance (tracer) and were performed within the 7 days prior to progesterone testing can interfere with progesterone results. Rough handling, contamination, or inadequate refrigeration of the blood sample can cause inaccurate test results. Progesterone levels vary widely throughout the menstrual cycle. Therefore, it is important for your health professional to know the first day of your last menstrual period, if possible. What should I avoid while taking progesterone? Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Progesterone may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. What are the possible side effects of progesterone? Stop taking progesterone and seek emergency medical attention or call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects: ---------------------------- an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); shortness of breath or pain in your chest; a sudden severe headache; visual changes; a painful, red, swollen leg; numbness or tingling in an arm or leg; prolonged, heavy, v____al bleeding; stomach or side pain; or yellowing of your skin or eyes. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take progesterone and talk to your doctor if you experience dizziness; drowsiness; headache; b___st pain or tenderness; abdominal pain or distention; diarrhea; v____al discharge; or mood changes, anxiety, irritability, or depression.

I had my progesterone levels checked because I am taking Chlomid, my progesterone levels were in the 30's, does anyone know if this means I am pregnant and is it a multiple birth pregnancy? I have read different articles and they all say different things.

I am 8 wks pregnant and have been spotting for 2 wks now.(the spotting started immediately after intercourse) It goes from brown to pink to red. It is very intermitten, no cramping and all other poss. symptoms of pregnancy. I had an ectopic pregnancy previously and have been monitored very closely. My levels rose great, I have had 2 ultrasounds with the fetal heartrate shown each time. Both were done during the spotting and the heart rates were 119 and 128. I am now on progesterone the spotting was getting better but came back this morning, I have another ultrasound on Tuesday. I am getting very frusterated I think there has to be a cause for the bleeding! Does anyone have an opinion!

Kelly-In my previous pregnancies with my sons, I also had problems with spotting, especially after intercourse. Sometimes even after sneezing or a bowel movement. One reason was because my Cervix was very vascular-meaning alot more blood is pumping through the veins and arteries there because of the pregnancy so any "trauma" to the area would make me spot. Also, I had a low lying placenta for the first 5 months of pregnancy. The placenta covered the opening to the cervix completely and anytime I had intercourse or sneezing, bowel movements etc. I would spot. Ask your doctor about these issues. Just remember, that there are alot of reasons that you can spot and it doesn't necessarily mean it is coming from the baby. If it is due to a placental issue then you might have to abstain from intercourse until placenta moves out of the way but otherwise it doesn't harm your baby-they just need to keep a close eye on it. As far as the cervical issue, think of it as a bruise you keep bumping!! It also doesn't hurt your baby it just makes you stress more! Anyways hope this helps and let us know what your doctor says.

Same, same!! I'm glad to have found this website. I'm just starting my 8th week. I discovered I was spotting 2 weeks ago, I called my Doctor's office and spoke to a nurse who explained to me the potential seriousness of bleeding in the first trimester. We agreed to be "cautiously optimistic" - she told me to come in to have bloodwork done. The results came back with my hcg level normal and my progesterone level slightly low. She told me my hcg level was 6000, but did not tell my progesterone level. My Doctor prescribed Prometrium (100mg once per day). I was told to come back in the next day for more bloodwork. My hcg went up to 15,250 and my progesterone was 25, which she told me indicates a healthy pregnancy. Whew! I spotted a little bit again this past Friday, my first instinct was to stress out, but I then thought rationally and decided I don't need to stress - what will that help? My instincts tell me that all is ok - I don't think my spotting has anything to do with the baby. My first ultrasound is this coming Thursday, I'm so anxious to see that all is progressing normally. I've put a stop to exercising, which is starting to effect my overall state of mind, but from what I've read, it's what I should do. I hope to be able to report good things after my appt this week!! My symptoms aren't too pronounced, just full, tender b___sts, occasional slight nausea and fatigue, GAS, and I did have a bought with heat rash from repeatedly waking up sweating. Good luck to all - may we all be blessed with healthy babies!

I am so happy to have found this site. My son was conceived 5 yrs ago with IVF, I knew my progesterone was low before the treatment so I was on shots throught 1st trimester. I didn't think I would get pregnant without another IVF we actually have been saving for a 2nd IVF this summer. Last week I found that I was 6 weeks pregnant. I was put on progesterone. I don't like in the US so it was not promestin (the one most of you are taking) it is duphaston. I have been lightly spotting ever since I missed my period about everyother day. I have been on the progesterone pill since Wednesday and just the last two days it is now becoming brown. Does anyone know how long it takes after taking progesterone for the spotting to stop or if it will stop? They don't have progesterone blood tests here which would help easy my nerves. So is anyone else taking duphaston and know anything about suggested doses? if you compare the dose of duphaston suggested by the manufacturer for maintaining pregnancy it is 30mg a day way lower than the pills you all have there, and for myself I was taking progesterone shots the first time around. Tried the cream for about 1 1/2 weeks when my husband was away and not able to give the shots and had to go back to the shots when he got back. For those that are on the v____al cream good luck. I found it so difficult and so much would come back out it was so messy. Any help on the pregestrone would be appreciated to easy my mind. The medical care is not as agressive here as in the US.

I am in the same boat as a lot of you. This forum has given me confidence and hope. I had a miscarriage last October. We are now 12 weeks pregnant again. As soon as my doc found out I was pregnant he put me on progesterone suppositories 50mg twice a day. I had spotted for probably a month total, and the only explanation I received was that the progesterone could cause that. I haven't spotted for about two weeks now, but my progesterone keeps fluctuating. For about four weeks it ranged from 12 to 16, then it jumped to a 24, then l just discovered my latest dropped back to a 12. I am very nervous, but I have a previously scheduled appointment on March 2nd. We have already had 2 ultrasounds, and both showed a strong heartbeat. The first was 145 bpm, and the second was 175 bpm. Has anyone else had such a fluctuation in their progesterone levels? My doc said he was concerned, but hasn't told me to do anything differently.

Cindi - February 28

Krystal, Try not to worry too much. I have read a lot of people say it fluctuates. With my son I was put on it the day after ovulation because I did IVF. they tested it every other day but I never asked how much it was they just said it was good. This time I didn't know that I was pregnant and started it at 6 weeks. I was already having spotting by that time. It finally became brownish the last two days and so far when I got up this morning there wasn't any. I am praying to not see it again. If you are 12 weeks that is around that time that your placenta will start taking over. With my son I continued to 14 wks the specialist said I could stop at 12 wks but I was nervous and they said it wouldn't harm anything. if you are nervous ask your dr. if you can continue for 2 mor wks just to easy your mind. It is so hard to say don't worry. Try to keep a positive att_tude... Cindi

I posted a couple days ago cocerned with spotting and progesterone. I just had another ultrasound and the baby looked good with a heart rate of 144, it is starting to get arm and leg buds. I am still having trouble getting excited despite the spotting and all the worrying. My doc put me on 200mg of progesterone a day, but I found out today he never even drew my levels. When I asked he said that is "protocall", whatever that means. The ultrasound tech also mentioned that the sac looked a little small, but went on to say its nothing to worry about. What do you all think?

My last post was February 16th. I am now 8 1/2 weeks and my progesterone rose from 11.7 to 16.9. My doctor a__sures me that everything is good and I am still on the suppositories. I went to the doctor today and seen the baby! My husband and I heard its heartbeat also! Wow, what a relief. My next appointment is when I am 13 weeks. I will write then. Good luck to all of you.

Hello, I'm 15DPO now and I had 54 units of hCG yesterday. So, I'm pregnant, yupii, BUT my progesteron was just 14.1 when I was 9DPO. My OBG told me, that it was OK, because it should be at least 10. Tomorrow I asked him whether the test should be repeated because I'm pregnant now and he told me that it's useless to do it so often. What do you think? I'm scared, because I had missed abortion last year...

Hello everyone, I as 6 weeks preganant and received a phone call from my dr on Friday. He told me my progesterone level was very low at 5.6 which told him I was going to miscarry and sure enough I did and am still going through it.He would not give me any progesterone which I was very upset because this was my 3 miscarriage for the same problem.(low progesterone) He told me when something goes wrong it means the eggs are strong enough. I think he is full of it. I have been doing a lot of research the progesterone is what hold the baby in the uterus. I am going to go to a high risk Dr and see if next time he will give me the progesterone shots. I have no problem getting pregnant . But thank god I did carry a baby which is 2 1/2 so I know I can have one. I'm not giving up hope . Just have to find a knowledgible dr which specializes in this problem. Good luck to you all....

Cindi - March 2

Christine, I would definately find a different dr. My first son was conceived through IVF I had luteal phase defect which is characteristic of low progesterone. My progesterone was only 6 or less can't remember exactly. What the specialist told me was that the higher the progesterone the better the lining in the uterus for the egg to attach to. The egg needs a nice thick lining to attach and stay attached so progesterone thickens the lining and helps hold the embryo in place.

Hi to everyone. Your stories have been a comfort to me. Mine is similar to many. My LMP started on 1/26. Thursday 2/24 I had a positive home pregnancy test. Friday I went in to have HCG and progesterone taken. I received the results on Saturday; HCG was 600 and progesterone was 16. I had the levels taken again on Monday and HCG was 2100 but progesterone dropped to 11. My regular doctor wasn't in but the nurse staffed it with another doctor who prescribed prometrium (pill) 2xday for a total of 400mg. I have taken 2 doses so far. I went in for levels again today (Wednesday) and they only took HCG not progesterone. I asked could we please take progesterone for my peace of mind and the same nurse said that it would just give a false number since I have already taken the Prometrium. I have had one mc last September so I am as nervous as everyone else. My first u/s is scheduled for March 10th. Has anyone else had a similar experience (with normal HCG but a dropped progesterone level) and had a healthy baby? Again, thank you to all that shared there story. God Bless!
