Progesterone Level

I have had two miscarriages in the past year. I am now pregnant again and 5 1/2 weeks along. My doctor has me on 200 mg prometrium once a day. Does that dosage seem low? I am to go this Thursday to test my progesterone level. Hopefully it has risen from the 6.1 is was earlier. I also wondered about taking a baby aspirin a day would help prevent another miscarriage. Has anyone been told by a doctor to do this while taking prometrium?

Hi I am so glad to have found this site! I just started taking prometrium 100mg 3 times a day last night! I am 43 and have 2 sons aged 7 and 9 yrs old, this pregnancy will be a blessing, I was told my progesterone is a bit low 13 when the Dr would like to see it over 20. He said at my age it is quite normal and helps keep the environment safe for the baby. I am still worried although they said in24 hours my level should go up very quickly. does anyone know if there are pros and cons for the cream or the pills? Thankyou and have safe happy pregnancies! Niki

Michelle, I recently suffered my fourth miscarriage in a year and a half. I was told by one doctor that I should take one baby aspirin a day because of a blood disorder. I also was taking prometrium 100 mg 2x a day. Unfortunately, I miscarried anyway. I wouldn't just start taking the baby aspirin if I were you. I would ask your doctor about it, and he might recommend doing some blood tests to be sure that the aspirin will help and not harm. After I miscarried, my new doctor performed some further blood tests, and I just received the results. It turns out that my blood levels have changed, and the baby aspirin did nothing but harm my pregnancy. We are looking at new treatments for a pregnancy in a couple of months. Good luck to you, and I hope this answers your question.

Hey Ladies, this site makes me feel so much less alone. I am 5 weeks pregnant and have had one miscarriage. I found out today that I have to take progesterone suppositories. Had my Hcg levels tested again today and tomrrow hear what is happening. The waiting kills. I feel SO tired, hot and dizzy.

Hello, my name is Dawn, I am 33 and live in Kansas. 3 years ago I suffered 2 miscarriages and hadn't been able to get pregnant since. Well through some miracle I am 9 weeks pregnant now. I saw my dr gave me a Progesterone shot at 5 and 7 weeks. He will give me on next week then again at 13 weeks. It seems to be working because I haven't had any problems at all! I was tested a couple of years ago and told I had low levels so I ran straight to the dr when I got a positive hpt this time. My dr said even if my body is making it you can not get too much so the shots are my safety net.

To Debbie & Aimee, & anyone else this may help. I have had 3 m/c's all by 6-7 wks of pregnancy, my last this past Feb. After 2 mos of exhaustive testing, everything came back normal so we were given the ok to try again the end of June of this year. On day 19 of my cycle, after ttc, I started 400mg vag. progesterone supp. and was told to get a beta hcg on day 30. If pregnant, continue on, if not, d/c and wait until day 19 of next cycle (28 day menstrual cycle). Fortunately, on the first month of trying again, I had a positive test on July 19, and I'm 41! I continued on the progesterone supp and was told by my doctor I could stop them at the end of week 10, which confused me because I heard the placenta doesn't take over until week 12. Anyways, he let me stay on them for peace of mind. I'm 12w3d today, and I plan to continue through this Saturday. So far so good, however, I am still afraid to come off them as I'm sure most women are when they get to the point where their docs tell them they can d/c them. Hope this helps... oh, and I had spotting at exactly 4wks, brown, and it lasting only the one day so it's ok if you spot, as long as your u/s is ok. Hope this helps everyone. Never thought we'd ever get this far, never have before and I'm praying and enjoying every day of this wonderful miracle. Ultrasound shows a strong heartbeat of 150 bpm and the baby wiggles all over! I hope this brings hope because before taking these, I didn't think I'd ever have a chance at having a child. Best wishes to all!

Oh, and to add, I was put on vag suppositories because my doctor told me they get absorbed the best either v____ally or rectally... that taking pills wasn't as effective since a lot of it doesn't get absorbed since it has to go through your entire system, therefore breaking it down. However, this is one doc's opinion, just sharing what I was told and I had a lot of success. Also, to add to other questions, I have heard of MANY babies born normal and healthy even though progesterone levels were low in pregnancy. Let's not forget that we're all different, and what's normal for one, may not be the same for another. Just try to relax everyone, do what you can and what you're told, and you'll have peace of mind knowing you've done all you can. Trust me, after 3 m/c's, I understand your worry and your panic. Just believe.

to all concerned. i was preg spring 2003. at about 6 wks i started spotting on a thur.evening. called doc and she was out of office on friday so i had to see her partner. he did us. we seen baby and heartbeat. he sent me for bloodtest but it did not get followed up on until next monday. it was late tues. before i could start prometrium. i took it until my first doc visit at about 9 wks. when us was done we found no heartbeat and it was size of 6 wk pregnancy. had d&c.after more than a year later i am now 14 wks pregnant. i skip home test and went straight for blood test. she put me on the v____al cream this time because of the side effects of the prometrium. i have had blood test every wk since. numbers have always been good. i am 40 years old and this will be my first baby. i guess everyone should still have hope.

Hi! I have had three friends who were unable to maintain a pregnancy until they took progesterone supplements through the first trimester. Now they have beautiful children. Hang in there! PS I"m taking vag progesterone now(icky!), don't know if I"m pregnant or not, been really dizzy, I thought it meant I"m preg--now I think maybe it's the progesterone? Opinions?

this site is really helpful, because Ididn't know about suppositories, and it is hard for me to hold a baby. Thank you and pray for me. How much do they cost?

Reb - September 21

The suppositories are relatively cheap, and my insurance covers most. I am paying about $2.50 a month, with my insurance picking up about $30. Just to catch everyone up, I am now 9 wks, had the first US one week ago, saw a h/b and all looks good. I haven't any blood tests since week 5, but I have had morning, noon and night sickness for the past 3 wks and I am beat. Dr said this is one time when feeling bad is good. still on 50mg supps everynight, faithfully. Go for my first full OB appt at week 11. You all are so helpful in this roller coaster ride. My h wants so bad to tell the world. I need him to wait til that placenta takes over!

Hello all. Just wanted to update everyone. My wife is now 16 wks preg and we got to see the baby the other day. Great H/B and it even appeared to be sucking its thumb. My wife has felt it move a few times, everything seems to be going well. She is now off the prometrium, and everything is ok. I know how frustrating it can be to lose one...lost ours in May...found out she was preg again in June...she never had a period. We were so scared that she would lose it...but everything is great now. The highest her progesterone level was on it's own was 15.1. I think that the next time we we are expecting, we are not even going to find out the Prog level. It drove us batty until she stopped the Prometrium. Hope all is well...and will be praying for you guys.

I am 8 wk 5 days and boy have I had a time with progesterone. I have never had a miscarriage & my heart goes out to those of you that have suffered such a great loss. Maybe my story can help, or you can help me wither way. My 1st pregnancy I took prog. suppositories 100 mg 2x day through my 14th week. My original number was not that low in hind sight at 17, but I carried her full to term, no side effects of the prog. This pregnancy started out much lower at 9. After 1 week of the suppositories it went up to 12.7 still too low, but my hcg levels look great, saw a heartbeat on the U/S and the heartbeat was 130 at 7 weeks. The baby measure 2 days smaller than actual gestational age, but I did this with my daughter too. Now, after having additional bloodwork at 8 wks 3 days my progesterone has once again dropped to 10. I will start either the injections or pills tomorrow, though I am thinking of bringing out the big guns and just going for the injections - just whatever it takes to get this kid here safe. What I am wondering is, how are you ladies that posted earlier this summer? How many of you made it with low progesterone? Especially those with the much lower numbers. I would love to hear how yall are doing.

Lynn - September 24

Jennifer, my progesterone level was at 9.2 when I was 9 weeks. I went on prometrium supplements (2x 100mg per day pills) and my level went up to 36.0 by 12 weeks, at which point I was told to stop taking the pills. I'm now almost 16 weeks (will be on Monday), and have had absolutely *no* problems since then. Have faith!!

Jennifer - September 24

Thank you Lynn. I started prometrium 100 mg 2x/day last night. Hopefully I will have similar results :) But your story helps my hopes - THANKS!

Christine - September 24

My levels of progesterone up till 6 weeks pregnant have been high 20's low 30's. They plumeted down to 17 at 6weeks 2 days. Am I losing the baby? Or can the levels bounce around that much?
