Symptoms Of Blighted Ovum

SISTER - April 27

Hi everyone my sister is 9 weeks and she had a scan yesterday and saw that there was a sac and no fetas. The doctor didn't really tell my sister what was going on. the only thing he did say was that she could be not as far in her pregnancy then she thought. because she had a blood test done two weeks ago and her level were high. So now she has to wait to see if her levels go even higher. I want to know can she have a blighted ovum at 9 weeks.

Hello sister, on researching this topic i have found women who have been miss diaganosed with b/o beacuse of different reasons and have gone on to have healthy babies and others like my self who had b/o and positive we were farther along than the scan shows. I to was told to wait two weeks for a repeat scan so that the dr could be sure. I was never told about b/o by my doctor as i think they like to be 100% about the diagnosis, they just said it's not good news or bad as to not commit them selves. By this time i had already began to loose dark coloured blood, and lost all preg symptoms. I was 10 weeks from my dates but only a scan date of 5/6 week old sack. Mine did end in m/c after a week and a half spotting and that would have made me nearly 12 weeks. Dr's refer to this as a missed m/c, when the baby has been gone for a while, but the body hasn't m/c yet. Sorry for being so graphic, I wish your sister good luck.

Dear Scared, I had all the pregnancy symptoms (slightly sore b___bs, headaches everyday, upset stomach and light cramping) but I was so happy to be pregnant. Even after I found out I had an empty sac I was still sick. I thought maybe the baby would show up, but after 9 weeks, it didn't so I went home and miscarried on my own 2 days later, because it was so early into the pregnancy. Everything will get easier for you.

I am an ivf'r who just had a scan at 6 weeks. Betas started rising slow but rose nonetheless to dr's satisfaction. Howerver, today, the scan shows just the sac. No signs of the embryo or heartbeat. Possible, but unconfirmed b/o. The dr's were honest with us about a 60/40 chance of this working. I go back in 4 days to see if something shows on the scan. I started with some dark spotting two days ago. They told me not to worry, it was old blood. From what I've read in your responses, doesn't look like this ever turns out good. I'll ofcourse go through the motions until it's an undisputable fact. But your transparency about your intimate details is indescribably comforting. We each walk our own delicate details and the world around us seems so small. Thank you for sharing. It helps.

howdy, I'm 35, pregnant with no:7, got 3 kids. Had a scan 3 weeks ago which showed an empty sac of 5w4d. I have got severe nausea, and sore b___sts, but have been lightly bleeding for 22 days, no cramping. Will be having another scan in a few days to find out if I have a b/o. My heart goes out to all of you. Your stories have made me realise that I have probably got no chance of this pregnancy turning out well. Best of luck to you all and keep on trying. Even though you may lose a child, when you've got one in your arms it does feel wonderful.

I had a blighted ovum that was not detected until I went for my 12 week appointment to hear the heartbeat. The doctor could not hear the heartbeat, so he did an ultrasound and the blighted ovum was discovered. I had sore b___sts, but that was my only pregnancy sympton (other than feeling bloated). I had no spotting at all and eventually had to have a d&c.

I am in the same boat, went for my 2nd u/s today and still no fetus. I'm supposed to be 9 weeks on fri and the sac is only measuring 4-5 weeks. I would prefer to have it happen naturally but don't know how long it will take. My Dr. said there is meds they can give you to help things along instead of having a d&c. Has anyone heard of these? It sounds a little better than the surgery. What a disappointment this is. I know how you are all feeling and hope to have a successful pregnancy soon! Thanks, Pam

Like all of you, I have gone through two m/c as a result of blighted ovum. I just found out about my 2nd m/c today. It's very discouraging but keep your hopes up !

Pam37 - My doctor gave me Misoprostol to take orally to help speed up the expulsion process. I took it and it took affect within an hour. I had cramping and bouts of diaherra. My bleeding has definitely increased as a result. I don't believe I've pa__sed the sac yet. I still have some cramping right now and it's about 13 hours from the time I took the medication. Hope this helps.

My story did not end up on a happy note. I had spotting right from the time i found out i was pregnant and didn't have any pregnancy symptoms at all just that my HCG levels were rising normally. At what i thought was 6w 4 days i went for an ultrasound to discover that i was really about 8.5 weeks along with only a sac. The next day my levels started to drop and my ob booked me in for a d&c yesterday. I have been rea__sured that it is just bad luck that it happened to me and that there is no reason why i shouldn't have healthy pregnancies in the future. This was my first pregnancy so it was a huge rollercoaster ride but i am glad that it is over and we can start again soon. I am wondering how long it takes to start ovulating again? Thanks

Angela, How bad was it? Is it over for you yet? I know I wil have to go this route, I am barely spotting and doesn't last long. I will be taking the meds wed. How heavy and how long is the bleeding? Is it as painful as a heavy period? Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it and sorry you're having to go thru this too! I'm just ready for it to be over! Thanks, Pam

Mojo - June 21

I miscarried the first time at the beginning of this year. Was coming up to 13 wks. Then fell pregnant again in April. Thought that everything was going ok. Had swollen /tender b___sts, sicky feeling. Had a show 1 day last wk so booked in to early pregnancy clinic. Had a scan which showed a sac which was the size of 5wks but no fetus. They said I had a early pregnancy or early pregnancy failure. I know that it is the failure as I should have been over 8wks pregnant. Have got to go back in 2wks time for another scan. Haven't had any more show or brn discharge. I just feel gutted that this has happened for the 2nd time in a matter of 6 months. I have 2 other children 12yrs and 13yrs. I am 37yrs so am starting to wonder if it is my age as have had the same partner all the time. Good luck everyone for the future.

Worried - June 29

Had b/o and d&c last Jan. Just found out over a wk ago I'm pregnant again and all so excited. But since then I've had the bwn discharge everyday, had symptoms (sore b___sts, fatigue)earlier on but they're starting to go away. I'm worried sick that this is going to be another b/o. My doctor sent me for a blood test yesterday to measure the hcg level and will do it again tomorrow and they'll compare to see if it's going up as it should or not. too early to see anything in an u/s. Just want to know if any of you have husbands or partners who are on some kind of medication? Just wondering at all if sperm health has anything to do with it?

Thanks elyse. Have had 2 blood test to check hcG, first one came back with 32000 and the 2nd one at 48 hrs later, 48000. My dr's nurse said it's good but it didn't double. Any thoughts?

Worried, I had a d&c on Wednesday due to a blighted ovum. I never miscarried it. The embryo stopped developing around week 6 and the sac continued to grow slowly therefore still putting off hormones and giving me pregnancy symptoms. My only clue that something might be wrong was brown discharge that occurred for about an hour on two consecutive days. I had never had this with my two successful pregnancies. I was supposed to be in my ninth week, went for my first appointment, did an ultrasound due to the minor spotting, and went for a d&c a few days later. I really had no symptoms. The dr thought I would probably carry the sacs another month or so because they were in such good shape. I am so glad after my d&c that my b___sts have quit hurting, my nausea is gone, and the heartburn has stopped. I still am very fatigued, but I am only two days out of it. I think as far a symptoms go, each person is different. You may have to get forceful with the dr office and let them know how stressed you are and why. The stress is not good for the baby! Wishing you luck.
