You ovulate approximately 14 days before the start of your next period. If you have a 28 day cycle, that means around day 14 (counting from the FIRST day of your period) you are your ovulating and you would be the most fertile about 5 days before until 2 days after ovulation.
Although if you have an irregular cycle it can be hard to predict when you'll ovulate, and some women ovulate at a slightly different time.
So the short answer is if you don't want to get pregnant, then ALWAYS use protection.
