Question About Hospital Policies

This is my second. With my first I got to the hospital 3 cm dilated and almost fully effaced with a consistent contraction pattern. As soon as I got there they made me lay down in bed and strapped a baby heart monitor on, then put an IV in. After that it all went pretty crazy...not getting into any details. BUT the question is, I've been reading that women walk and stand or try other laboring positions besides laying down. How can you do that with all that stuff attached to you? Do you have any say in when they can put the monitor on or the IV in?

if it's the hospital's protocol for every patient to have an IV port in, they should be able to put in the IV, but just not have it connected. My dr said that if you're not using meds where you ahve to have an IV hooked up and monitors, then you can walk around, they'll have you lay down every so often to put on the monitor for 15 mintues to check the baby...and tehn you can get up again.

wow! when i got to the hospital with my first, there was never mention of all that monitoring equipment.... it might have made a difference, that i was with my midwife, who worked at the hospital too and therefore had complete control of the situation-- not a regular doctor. Every now and then she would check all my vitals and baby's heartbeat, etc... but other than that i was free to walk or stand or have a bath, anything! And i couldn't imagine it any other way.... I do believe that you are allowed to refuse all that monitoring equipment, as long as you are not a high risk delivery. Speak up about what you want and what you don't want, and who knows most of the time you can probably get your way :)

I just went through that ....on Wednesday night - I had a great contraction pattern 4 mins apart I took my yoga ball because that was really helping me ....well needless to say they made me lie down on the bed hooked me up to blood pressure cuff and contraction monitor and baby doppler - I was so frustrated I said why can't I sit on my yoga ball she said we need to get a good reading of the baby';s heartrate and we won't be able to get it on that...dude whatever so of course after 3 hours my contractions died off and I was not dilating so they sent me home I was so frustrated! I think they do that on purpose...but I believe it's their Policy so I have decided to stay home as long as possible to try to make sure it's the real thing - my concern is that this is baby number 3 and if I stay home until I can't stand the contractions anymore it will be too late for my epidural...LOL

Oh Tina, I didn't know that happened! That definitely sucks! I hated it. I remember having the blood pressure cuff. AND I also remember them giving me a shot of something into my IV for pain and not telling me that it WASN'T going to take away any pain, all it did was make me care less. I felt high/drunk whatever you want to call it. Are you having contractions now??? I was reading on the july mommies thread that you are scheduled for a c-section -- bummer, the last thing you need with a house, two kids and A BABY (not to mention another big man baby) is to have a surgery. IRONMAMA, I do think you having a midwife changed a lot of things. I so wish I could take a bath at the hospital...we'll see. This time around I'll be a lot braver, that's for sure.

The c-section is up in the air at this point so far we are still going in for the induction and play it by ear after he saw how very unhappy I was about his opinion.....now I have heard that the hospital will only allow 3 people in the room when the baby is being delivered - ok no brainer my hubby and my mom and my bff Marcy - the thing that sucks is that every one else coming will be all b___t hurt but oh well I am not going to stress out about it - they will all just have to get over it.
