I just had my beautiful baby girl on July 15th and Im wondering if she should be so sleepy. I know she is a newborn and of course they sleep a lot but people have got me all concerned about jaundice and stuff like that...Usually every 3 hours i wake her up change her and feed her and by the time she is half way through her feeding she is dozing off then she goes right back to sleep. Is this normal or should she be awake for a little longer? Sometimes she stays up for a few minutes but not usually. She doesn't go for her check up until next week so Im just worried if she is ok.

red- I feel for you so much. I wish I could talk to you in person just because you are explain the EXACT situation with my son when he was born. I know how scary it is!!! People used to say things that would just freak me out. We seriously had the opposite problem from normal first time parents- because he just wouldn't wake up, wash clothes, naked feeds, it didn't matter. As a matter of fact I had to feed him with a pipet for the first few days because he had no desire to eat! Did you have a v____al deliver? My son was a forcep baby and they say that sometimes a hard deliver can cause them to be more sleepy...Just think of that long journey that babe just went through. Right now I would say the most important thing is making sure she has enough wet diapers and is eating enough. Which of course if you are nursing is a HUGE confusion in itself! :) The jaundice thing can be scary too...just make sure you are feeding her enough and she is going to the bathroom. Call if you are concerned but just hang in there! She sounds to me that she is a very healthy babe!!!!

my lil boy did that. i had to wake him for his feedings by getting him cold. undressing him and stimulating him. i was on paxil while i was pregnant and b___stfeeding so that may have had something to do with it also. If ur worried call the pediatrician, they will tell u if they think something is wrong. Good luck hon!

Sounds totally normal to me. Don't listen too much to other people - it'll drive you crazy.

He is probably just fine. My son was the same way when he was born for about 3 or 4 days. He would not even wake up when we undressed him or anything. Like someone else said he had a hard labor though. Just when we were about to call the doc because he would wake long enough to eat my milk came in and that seemed to wake him up!

red- from my experience with my first child, it takes weeks for them to get on a good schedule and figure out that night time is for sleeping, and day time is for awake time. I would say the first 8 weeks were the most difficult. You kind of just have to go with the flow of things, until they adjust. ...Trust me, I know how hard, confusing, and worrisome it can be. Just hang in there and try not to stress. :)
