Your experience. I'm having one done next Monday at 36 weeks to determine lung maturity. Feel free to share what the numbing shot was like, the actual needle, any pain or discomfort during or after, if you had any problems, etc. I can read all I want about the procedure but prefer to hear women's real experiences on what it was like.

I have had two of those, one at 37 weeks and one at 38 weeks. It's actually not too bad. I won't lie, it hurts when the needle goes in but just for a moment. I was more worried about my baby but they were fine both fine, nothing bad happened. It will be sore for a day where the needle went in so take it easy. The one at 37 weeks was immature and we waited 5 more days for the c-section and the other one, at 38 weeks was mature. But both of my girls needed an apnea monitor when they were discharged from the hospital. I had GD both pregnancies. Let me know if you have any more questions. :) Good Luck to you!

Are you having a planned C-section...why would they do an amnio at 36 weeks.....Yikes, I am sorry. You are so close to delivery, can't they just wait...?

Hey Kay. I had one at 15 weeks because I am 35 we decided to do one to check for downs and other things. I was really nervous about it but it wasn't bad at all. The numbing shot hurt the worst of all of it and that only felt like a pinch ! When the other needle went in I felt pressure but no pain. After I just had to go back in an hour to check the heartbeat and then I just went home and took it easy for the rest of the day. The only lasting effect I had was a small bruise. ( I always bruise from shots though) They might monitor you more because you are farther along but try not to worry too much. It wasn't bad at all. I will probably be having another one because i now have gestational diabetes. I am at 31 weeks now so hopefully everything goes ok for the next few weeks. Also my 9 year old was born at 34 weeks and he was great. Breathing on his own and he still weighed 6 lbs. 14 oz. !!! Came home after 2 days. So I am sure all will be gret with your little one !! Good luck and let us know how it all goes.

Mommyazure - Did you have steroid shots at all for their lungs? I had some preterm labor issues so I got a round at 29 weeks so I'm pretty sure ther's a good chance it will come out positive. How big were your babies? Iona -Yes I'm having a planned c-section and they're doing the amnio because as long as it comes back positive I'll be having him that afternoon. The benefits of having him as soon as his lungs are developed out weigh the risks of waiting. michelly - I know they'll be watching his heartrate and my contractions because they said it's possible it could send me into labor or cause my water to break. It doesn't really matter that much I guess since most likely I'll be having him later that day anyway! I wonder if my belly will be less sore if it gets deflated right after lol

Kay101 -I'm surprised they are doing your amnio so soon. I did not have steroid shots. My first Daughter was born 7 pounds 11 ounces 18 inches, my second was 8 pounds 10 ounces 19 inches and with her I had pre-term labor so they gave me procardian to stop contractions because we hadn't done the amnio yet. Also with the second I had a condition where I had too much fluid in my belly - AFI showed 26. I had my girls 11 months apart - what a ride!! Have they told you how much your lo weighs? They were right on with my babies. I was on insulin 3 times a day 150 units/day and gained 20 pounds with each pregnancy and lost it right away, just b___stfeed and you'll be fine. Take Care and Let me know how it goes! zredhead at hotmail dot com.

kay101 - April 25

Haha I was on Procardia too! I actually just stopped taking it after having to take one every 6 hours for almost 6 weeks....on top of bedrest. THAT was fun, but I got stuck in the hospital for a couple days on magnesium sulfate and compared to that, bedrest at home seemed like a cake walk. At 33 weeks he was measuring 5 pounds 9 ounces so they think he'll be a little over 7 when he gets here. I had to go out and buy some newborn onsies. My daughter was 8'11 so she was right in the O-3 months so I had totally skipped any newborn stuff since it never fit her. I'm just scrambling around because I just got my freedom back then find out I'm probably having him in a week and a half! My doctor is doing the amnio so I can have him delivered as soon as possible.

kay101 - April 25

Oh, with your second did you deliver the same day as your amnio? I go in to have mine at 9am, then they said they'll monitor me for a bit and probably send me home to wait for the results. He thinks it'll probably be back around 1and as long as it's positive they'll be doing the c-section that day. I don't know what to do with myself sitting there wondering during that time!

MommyAzure - April 25

Kay101 - Wow I'm so excited for you. Yeah all of this is a lot to go through.... ya gotta really want it!! haha My first amino was mature and we did her c/s the next day. The second was immature and we waited 5 more days. I will be thinking about you next Monday and hope that your test come back with a green light and you'll have your baby boy in your arms. They get preliminary results in about 3 hours then they do a more refined test. With my immature result we waited to hear about the second results and it was too close to being borderline so we waited... that sucked. I asked if we could give steroids but it wasn't an option and it couldn't be repeated. Thats so awesome you'll have one of each! Enjoy :)

MollieM - April 26

I actually had an amino 2 weeks ago today at 36 and 2. I also had a round of steroids at 29 weeks, and delivered a 6 lb 10 oz boy the day after my amnio. I did not have a c-section however. I would not worry at all. It was not painful, but a little nerve wracking. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

kay101 - April 26

Congrats mollie! You sound exactly like me so that gives me high hopes! Mommyazure - Do the first results just tell them if they're mature or not? Like when yours came back as mature did you have to wait for the second results with that one too? How long were you monitored for after the amnio? If it only takes 3 hours to get the results I wonder if it's even worth going home since we live about 3O minutes away. Maybe we should just go out to eat near the hospital or something.

RMC - April 27

I had one this past Tuesday, the 22. It hurt like hell, I'm sorry to say. It was to make sure my l.o. lungs were mature to be delivered at 35 weeks and 6 days on Wed, the 23. And they were. The problem I had is the first time they went in to withdraw 10 ccs of fluid and only got 3 - so they had to poke me a second time. It hurt worse than the spinal for my csection!

MommyAzure - April 27

Kay - Yes if the first result is mature then your all set and you can have your baby. If it's immature you wait for the more refined test that takes 24 hours to come back. If you're having a c/s then you have to be NPO for 8 hours prior. The second one I had to be NPO, did the amnio, got monitored for about 30 minutes then we went to a restaurant and I was starving.... dying to eat and then we found out that it was immature while we were at the restaurant and I ordered a huge grinder - ate the whole dang thing!!! So then we waited 5 more days for the c/s. Make sure you ask them if you need to be NPO so they can do your c/s after your amnio. Good Luck Sweetie!! ~ Azure

kay101 - April 27

What does NPO stand for? I know he said if it comes back mature we'd be doing it that day. My dr. office has 4 doctors so they rotate and since it was his decsion to deliver me at 36 weeks he's the one who wants to do the amnio and surgery. He mentioned something around 1:OO but I don't know if that was just to get the results back or around the time I would be coming back in.

kay101 - April 27

And rmc, congrats on your baby! I hope I'm like you and mine come back positive. Did they numb you at all? That kinda reminds me of how it is when they try to draw blood from me, they're never able to get enough out.

RMC - April 27

kay101 - thank you! unfortubately, i had no kind of numbing at all. initially it didnt hurt going in,but once they started drawing the fluid it was burning and i was crying like a baby! good luck to you!

kay101 - April 27

Well that makes me feel a little better because I'll be getting one lol sorry it sucked for you though! I think the worst part of it is the anxiety. I HATE needles! My epidural with my daughter didn't bother me, and they had to do it twice. The numbing shots with that were just quick pokes then all I felt was the pressure of the needle. I'm hoping it's the same with this.
