Hi ladies,
I was a little upset yesterday when I found out my sitter was putting Karo syrup in my DD whole milk. She claims that it will prevent her getting constipated and help her transition from formula to whole milk better, but over the weekend she was taking it just fine. Then she questioned me what Organic milk was??? OK , lady join the real world!!! My husband tried to explain to her the difference in her whole milk than organic and he said she looked very puzzled, but anyways have any of you heard of putting Karo syrup in whole milk??? My dad flipped, he has a mouth full of dentures due to Karo, thoughts please :)

I doubt a little Karo will do any harm. Politely ask her to stop using it and that should be that. It is not a big deal. It is a "home remedy" from the "olden days".
I also seriously doubt your father has a mouth full of dentures solely due to Karo syrup. A life time of improper dental hygene is more likely the cause or just "bad teeth" due to heredity. Another point is...your daughter will put things in her mouth that may be "organic" in nature but not neccesarily what would be considered good. I understand trying to giver her nothing but the best but facts remain, children will migrate to all kinds of things and it will be tough for you to monitor everything. Try relaxing a bit...it is ok!

When I had my son 11 years ago, my pediatrician reccomended giving him a small amout of Karo in his bottle for very bad constipation. Knowing what I know now I would not have done it. All it is is corn syrup, which anyone trying for a healthy diet tries to avoid. So why would you give it to a baby? I don't think my son will have having any adverse effects now, I just will not repeat this time around.

My dd's Dr. had me put a small amount in some water when she was about 4 months old. It was for constipation and it was once or twice a day for a day or two and then when needed. I don't think it's supposed to be an everyday thing. While a little is not harmful, it isn't exactly healthy on a regular basis. Corn syrup is used in everything sweet, lollipops, sodas, etc. I'd ask the sitter to stop immediately and possibly look for another if you feel she will do such things in the future without asking .

corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup which is the additive in food that is making us fat are chemically different... my friends doc had her giving her month old baby brown sugar in water for constipation... i dont think it would be too bad for a little bit of corn syrup as long as she isnt just putting the nipple on the karo bottle and giving it to the baby you know??

My doctor recommended giving a tablespoon of dark corn syrup (not light) mixed in the formula or milk to help with constipation. He specifically said not to use light corn syrup, only dark. Not sure why, but I have read that corn syrup and also honey could cause botulism in babies under 1 year old. I did use the corn syrup occasionally and my son is perfectly fine.

My doctor actually recommended using dark Karo syrup in my baby's bottle. But it was to treat constipation as needed, not to prevent it. And I would think that brushing your child's teeth every day would prevent any problems with tooth decay. Wouldn't the Karo have affected your dad's baby teeth only? That just sounds weird to me.

I don't think it would cause physical harm to the baby, however, Karo syrup is sugar and you may not want to introduce your DD to sweets just yet. Bad eating habits start early. HOWEVER, don't be so tough on the sitter for not being familiar with organic products. Lots of people make that face when you tell them you use organic this or organic that. Also, organic does not make it better.

yeah, I'm not too a___l about organic foods, but I've just seen so much in the paper and on the internet on the difference and whether it's worth the money to go organic, I was just more upset that she does as she pleases with our baby and if she was taking the milk fine, we felt there was no need for syrup, not every bottle at least.

Karo syrup can be found on the shelves of most regular grocery stores such as Walmart, together with other types of syrup such as maple syrup. Prices will differ from store to store and will sell in different currencies across the world.
